In video games, specifically in open-world games, quests or in-game missions are not linear. You can literally wander around for hours in the game without making even a minute of progress in the storyline. For example, in Red Dead Redemption 2, after the snow part of the game, you could wander around for hours, getting into conflicts with different NPCs or doing side quests for them. Still, if you don’t know which quest to do, you will not make a single percentile of progression in the game.

But that’s the beauty of playing an open-world game: to wander around and find yourself in different situations, enjoying every moment of it. However, if there’s a story that is the intended experience for the game, then you should follow it. Now, in this blog, I am going to guide you on how to do it in Elden Ring Night Reign. After reading this blog, you’ll know exactly which quests to do to progress in the DLC’s story.

Quests in the Game
The game works simply. In this DLC, the main story missions are the remembrance quests for each Nightfarer. During these quests, you learn about the characters’ background stories, and upon completion, you receive special rewards. The loop for these quests is linear and repeatable: once you complete the story for one Nightfarer, you can complete the stories for other characters as well.
Memory Fragments
Memory Fragments unlock new chapters in your character’s story. Think of them as keys that unlock a character’s remembrance quest. You earn these fragments by doing expeditions and defeating bosses. The more expeditions you complete and the more bosses you defeat, the more fragments you collect.
Each chapter requires a different number of memory fragments, so it’s not possible to specify exactly how many expeditions are needed to unlock the whole quest for a character.
Starting a Remembrance
A remembrance allows you to revisit a character’s memories and progress through their storyline. When you start a remembrance, the world becomes a memory version, and your upcoming expeditions will have new quest objectives. NPCs may also provide new dialogues.
How to start a remembrance:
- Go to the journal at the Roundtable Hold.
- Select the unlocked chapter using memory fragments.
- Choose Begin Remembrance.
That’s it! The remembrance is now active.
Complete the Remembrance
While the remembrance is active, you must:
- Explore the memory world – travel through the game area as usual.
- Interact with NPCs – they provide your next objectives.
- Complete expedition objectives – mostly involve finding items or defeating enemies.
After completing the objectives, you may either succeed or die. Upon death or success, you return to the Roundtable Hold and receive your rewards.
This loop applies to every remembrance chapter for every Nightfarer: earn memory fragments → start the remembrance → complete objectives → get rewards.
Quick Reference Table: Remembrance Quest Loop
| Step | Action | Reward/Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Earn Memory Fragments | Unlock remembrance chapter |
| 2 | Begin Remembrance | Enter memory version of world |
| 3 | Complete Expedition Objectives | Progress storyline |
| 4 | Return to Roundtable Hold | Receive rewards (items, XP, or story progression) |
