Today, I will share a perfect build of Outworld Destroyer. This guide will cover all the aspects of OD in the current meta. This hero can only be impactful in mid-lane. The guide will help you win the most games and assist you in climbing up your MMR easily.
Introduction
Outworld Destroyer is a carry and disabler. He can reset fights, break chain stuns, and save teammates with Astral Imprisonment. Essence Flux always keeps his mana refill, so he can constantly output pure damage with Arcane Orb. Outworld Destroyer can then kill enemies off with Sanity’s Eclipse, which deals damage in a large radius based on the difference between Outworld Destroyer’s maximum mana and each enemy’s mana in the affected area.
If you want to play OD, make sure you pre-ban Necrophos so that you can easily win the game otherwise that hero will cause a lot of trouble for you!
Tip: Stealing mana from enemy heroes can make a big difference between you and enemy heroes, giving you a high advantage.

Item Build & Skill Build
According to the current patch 7.35d, this is the skill build you should make.
Skill Build
- Take the Arcane Orb on level 2.
- Adds extra pure damage to Outworld Destroyer’s attacks, based on his remaining mana pool.
- Arcane Orb is what allows Outworld Destroyer to dish out thousands of damage in a few seconds. Do not underestimate the damage it can do to enemies, even if they have high armor/magic resistance, since it does pure damage
- Further, upgrade the skill according to the following sequence (8,9,10)
Tip: You can leave this ability on auto-cast, especially if you have level 2 Essence Flux.
- Astral Imprisonment should be taken on level 1.
- Places a target unit into an astral prison. The hidden unit is invulnerable and disabled. When the astral prison implodes, it deals damage to the target and steals a percentage of its max mana.
- Astral Imprisonment can be used to secure difficult last hits alongside imprisoning the enemy mid.
- Further, you can upgrade the Blink Stike according to the following sequence (4,5,7)
- Essence Flux should be taken later on Level 2.
- Passively grants a chance to restore a percentage of your max mana each time you cast an ability.
- You can upgrade this ability according to the following sequence (13,14,16)
Note: Casting Astral Imprisonment removes your opponent from the battlefield, buying you or your allies enough time to use Blink Dagger or a Town Portal Scroll to escape to safety
- Sanity’s Eclipse Unleashes a psychic blast that deals damage to enemies based on the difference between your mana and the target’s mana. Sanity’s Eclipse can hit units trapped by Astral Imprisonment. Deals bonus damage to illusions. Affected Heroes gain a Mana Allergy Debuff for 7 seconds, healing Outworld Destroyer every time they cast a spell.
- Try gaining more mana with your spells or items to further increase your ultimate damage.
- Always level up to this ability whenever it is up on level 6, level 12, level 18
Note: Buying Aghanim’s Scepter buffs damage that would bring Outworld Destroyer below 20% health and trigger a strong dispel. In addition, when the effect is triggered Outworld Destroyer consumes all his mana to create an all-damage barrier equal to 70% of his maximum mana that lasts for 15 seconds. This effect can occur every 80 seconds and cannot be refreshed.
Tip: Getting Aghanim’s Shard grants additional Mana Capacity to steal to Astral Imprisonment. Also allows allies to move at 70% movement speed during Astral Imprisonment (they are visible, but unforgettable and can’t perform any other actions).

Early gameplay / Mid game / Late game
Early gameplay (0:00 – 12:00)
In the early game phase, you should focus on your farm, and try to keep using Astral Imprisonment on the enemy to keep his mana pool low and secure the creeps. In terms of the enemy ganking you in the mid lane, you have to úse Astral defensively so that you will give away your kill and once you have some basic items try to gank the enemies with a low mana pool so that you get some kills and advance your way to make core items to be more impactful.
Mid gameplay (12:00 – 25:00)
In this stage of the game, remember to activate Black King Bar in fights, especially before enemies can disable you at the start of fights. Arcane Orb works on Ancients. So choose to farm Ancients instead of normal camps whenever possible for more farms. Arcane Orb works on Roshan. So you can take it early with an ally tanking for you. In addition, you can save allied heroes from potentially lethal abilities such as Reaper’s Scythe and Winter’s Curse. Similarly, use it to dodge projectiles. It is important to time it so that the projectiles connect while imprisoned since the spell does not disjoint projectiles. Astral Imprisonment can be used on them to negate some of the damage from damage over time abilities, such as Poison Nova and Doom ability, which can potentially end up saving the ally. Against long-lasting debuffs, it can often be cast twice before the debuff expires.
Late gameplay (25:00 – 60:00)
Generally, Outworld Destroyer does not scale well into the late game due to none of his spells piercing spell immunity. He is quite reliant on Black King Bar himself too, which in late-game fights is only 6 seconds. As such, your main job in the game is to end it as soon as possible and create space for your carry to farm. You should aim to kite enemy Black King Bars with items such as Force Staff or Hurricane Pike. Alternatively, you can get a Scythe of Vyse to hex enemies before they can use Black King Bar. if you repeat the sequence with Refresher Orb then it’s going to be an easy win, as long as you are killing the main cores.
Counters of Outworld Destroyer
Nyx Assassin
- Outworld Destroyer’s high intelligence makes him a good target for Mind Flare.
- Spiked Carapace is also the perfect tool against Astral Imprisonment: if used on Nyx, he can reflect the damage back
Phantom Lancer
- Doppelganger and Juxtapose allow Phantom Lancer to initiate on Outworld Destroyer, and, although Arcane Orb will normally destroy his illusions instantly, Phantom Lancer will spawn too many to deal with without using Sanity’s Eclipse.
Rubick
- Rubick can use Spell Steal to steal Astral Imprisonment, this can counter OD and his teammates in the team fights.
Shadow Demon
- Disseminate turns your high-damage Arcane Orb and Sanitiy’s Eclipse against Outworld Destroyer and his teammates.
- Scepter upgraded Demonic Purge will break Outworld Destroyer Essence Flux passive for 7 seconds, preventing him from regaining mana, and severely hindering your damage output.
Silencer
- Last Word and Global Silence will take Outworld Destroyer out of the fight unless he has built Black King Bar.
Mirana
- If Astral Imprisonment is used defensively, Mirana can use her Sacred Arrow to counter Outworld Destroyer making him stunned for like 5 seconds maximum which can be bad for OD and his teammates.
Sniper
- Due to his long attack range, Sniper can counter Outworld Destroyer pretty easily.
- Shrapnel can be used to disable the Blink Dagger and also prevent Astral-Blink escapes.
Brewmaster
- Primal Split can counter Outworld Destroyer pretty well if used in the team fights.
Wraith King
- Outworld Destroyer is useless against WK in the team fights as he has two lives due to his Reincarnation ability.
Huskar
- Huskar’s Inner Fire can counter OD by disarming him against a 1v1 match-up.
