Trial of Osiris in Destiny 2 is a weekly 3v3 Elimination mode where players battle for a chance to reach the Lighthouse. Players are matched based on how many matches they win and their overall performance. Winning all seven games allows you to access the Lighthouse. Higher win streaks offer better loot that includes Trials-themed armor, engrams, and masterworking materials. Bungie makes a lot of new changes in Trials of Osiris that every player must be aware of. Participating in Trials requires you to own the latest Destiny 2 expansion (The Final Shape), finish the “Trials Access” quest, and purchase the passage. Completing the matches, winning matches, and playing with clanmates provide additional reputation bonuses. In this guide, we’ll discuss Trials of Osiris in Destiny 2, including the major changes in rewards, matchmaking, and passages.

What is Trails of Osiris

Trials of Osiris has seen some massive changes, the biggest it has ever received since returning to us in Destiny. Trials of Osiris is the Pinnacle PVP activity inside Destiny 2. It runs from Friday reset to Tuesday reset. It’s a 3v3 Elimination game mode where players compete to reach the Lighthouse by winning seven matches without losing any. Your primary goal is to go Flawless to claim rewards. Keep in mind that reaching the Lighthouse with a flawless card is a significant achievement, as it rewards you with loot.

You can also purchase the Trials Passages from Saint-14, which track wins and offer rewards based on the number of wins achieved. Matchmaking is based on connection and weekly performance. This ensures that the matches are challenging and rewarding. Participating in Trials offers rewards like weapons, armor, adept weapons, emblems, and Trials-themed items. Bungie makes some major changes in Trials of Osiris, granting more rewards and challenges. Trials of Osiris cannot run during the following week.

  • When the new raid releases in a week
  • When the Iron Banner is active in a week
  • The first week of every new season

Trials of Osiris begins every Friday at 10:00 AM Pacific and ends on ends on the Tuesday weekly reset.

Core Mechanics of Trials

Here are the core mechanics of Trails of Osiris in Destiny 2.

  • The first team is required to win five rounds to win the match.
  • You can revive the team, but it requires a proper strategy.
  • The old Flawless Pool is replaced with Challenger Pool & Practice Pool.
  • Winning seven total matches allows you to gain access, as the Flawless run is no longer required.
  • The loot will be better when the win streak is higher.

Reward Changes

Let’s start with the changes to our rewards. There is a base set of rewards for wins and losses for all players, regardless of fire team configuration or passage. Now, each win grants you the following rewards.

  • 50% chance for a Trials weapon
  • 33% chance for a Trial Engram.
  • One progress Point towards the trials of Ghost Shell

The Cosmetics, this time around, actually look good. Loss grants you a 33% chance for a Trials weapon, so threaten on even if you do lose, you walk away with something. If you’re in a trio, a win or a loss, you also gain the following.

  • 50% chance for both a Trials weapon and a Trials Engram.

Now, reputation gains have also gotten a substantial rework. This reputation from losses, from Bungie, is supposed to be around 10 times the amount gained.

Getting a loss gives you 10 times the rep gain. When we broke down the numbers, a win would give you somewhere between 135 and 205 reps. A loss gives you somewhere between 60 and 155 reps. On top of that, you also receive bonuses when playing with clan members or in a trio.

For clan members;

  • A win gives plus 100 more reps.
  • A loss gives you 50 more reps.

Changes in Dominion

The Dominion game mode has also seen some minor changes, or at least on paper. This has changed how I play the game mode entirely.

  • The zone now takes 40 seconds to spawn rather than 30 seconds.
  • It also takes 20 seconds to capture up from 15.

This seems like a minor change. However, when playing trials, the objective, although important it isn’t the main focus. There are actually many rounds in which no one will actually get a capture. It’s almost like we’ve gone back to elimination. Timing things is also extremely important now, because with 40 seconds being the countdown. If someone runs at the cap point and drops their well too soon, by the time that timer counts down for them to start actually capturing the point, their well runs out.

This goes for anything when it comes to capturing the points. There’s a lot more room here for engaging, disengaging, and then re-engaging again. It seems like dancing around that control Point without making it the complete focus. On top of that, neutral Special ammo crates now spawn in at 30 seconds instead of 20 seconds.

Passage Changes

With the standard set of loot drops and game mode changes, how did our trial passages change? This is arguably the biggest change. You can see that we no longer have four different passages providing different bonuses like we used to. Instead, we just have two passages. We have the Trials of Osiris passage on the left, and then we have the Lighthouse passage.

Trials of Osiris Passage

Let’s just break down the Trials of Osiris passage. This passage is much different than the one we’ve had in the past. It’s meant to be more of an Iron Banner-esque passage in terms of rewards and matchmaking. This is essentially meant to try to get more players into the trials ecosystem. Even if you sit around at a below-average skill level. This uses weekly performance-based matchmaking. This means that you should be matching up against players who are performing relatively similarly to you for the first week.

  • Vehicles (Ships & Sparrows) / high win streaks
  • Ghost Shells (Earned by anyone)
  • New Trials Emblem / High win streaks

Your chance of getting these Cosmetics to drop goes up exponentially as your points increase. If you do reach the upper limit of 1,000 points in any of the three categories, then you’ll get a guaranteed drop from that category.

Lighthouse Passage

Lighthouse Passage is your most popular passage. It’s going to be the one you need if you’re trying to get to the lighthouse. The focus of this card is essentially to get seven wins, no matter how many losses you get along the way. However, an emphasis on how many wins in a row you can get, as that will greatly increase your rewards now. This card uses open skill matchmaking, which means you’re going to be matching pretty much anyone regardless of skill. They could be on their Flawless run, or they could be just now starting in the card; it doesn’t matter. It’s different from the previous passage we just talked about.

Your Lighthouse rewards are broken up into two categories. You have your repeatable rewards that you get every time you visit the lighthouse and open the chest. There’s also your weekly win streak rewards.

Weekly Win Streak Rewards

There are also weekly win streak rewards, which are packages earned for each win streak Milestone that you earn. They can only be claimed once per week. Earning a higher tier win streak will reward all lower tiers if they haven’t already been claimed. So, you won’t miss out there by getting a seven-win streak right away. These weekly win streak rewards are in addition to the repeatable chest rewards. Now, the rewards granted per win are as follows.

It also unlocks the new Flawless passage, and it enables progress and the new stat tracker for flawless win streak.

Complete Lighthouse Passage

There are two additional passages to mention. Once you’ve earned your way to the lighthouse, meaning you got seven wins Total but didn’t go Flawless, your passage will turn into a completed Lighthouse passage. This utilizes weekly performance-based matchmaking if everyone in your fire team is either on a completed, Flawless, or a trials passage. If anyone in your fire team, though, is still in a lighthouse passage, it will use open skill instead. Now, this passage is similar to the old experience of going to the lighthouse.

Flawless Lighthouse Passage

If you’ve earned all seven weekly win streak rewards, AKA you go Flawless, your Passage would then be updated to the Flawless passage. All the repeatable line-out chest rewards will be folded into their post-win drop chances, alongside higher chances to earn cosmetics and the new trials emblem. Being on this passage also allows you to progress the new Flawless win streak stat tracker. Instead of flexing how many times, you can go to the lighthouse now, you’re going to be flexing your Flawless win streak.
