A while back, Frank Gibeau, the President of EA Games, said that story games are dead or dying. He said this in an interview that was taken back in 2010, and fortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth in the past decade. Only one online game has ever won a game of the year title, which was Overwatch 2. Ever since then, no online game has ever won a game of the year award, and that’s for a reason.

Story games are the best form of storytelling because they have all the best aspects of it. Whether it’s narrating the story, the visuals, or giving the experience of actually doing things in the story, it’s by far the best medium to enjoy any story. Not only that, because the game does not need constant updates like they do in online games, devs have a lot of time to put into the core game and give the game more depth.
In this blog, we are going to talk about one of those things that gives the newly released Borderlands a lot of depth. In this blog, we are going to dissect each class from the game and will also rank them accordingly.

What are Classes in Borderlands:
So there are 4 different classes in Borderlands 4. You have to choose one of them when you start your walkthrough. Each class has a different playstyle archetype, special ability, and a distinct personality. So here are the four classes that we will discuss in a bit.
- Vex, the siren
- Rafa, the exo soldier
- Harlowe, the gravitar
- Amon, the forgeknight
While I liked to say that every class has a different playstyle, and there’s no wrong choice here. But the game does reward certain classes a lot more than the others, so we are going to talk about them from the best ones to the worst ones you could choose in your first playthrough.
Tierlist
S-Tier:
Rafa:
So Rafa has three distinct action skills. He has peace breaker canons, which are an auto turret from his shoulders, the ark knives, which are melee blades, and lastly he has APOPHIS lance, which comes in handy to get enemies who are at a longer range. Each of his action skills caters to different ranges of enemies. The melees are best for the close-quarter fights, the peacebreaker cannons work great on mid-range fights, and lastly APOPHIS lance works best.
Rafa is an extremely versatile vault hunter because he is optimal against any range of enemies. His overdrive supercharges his movement as well as his damage, making him an explosive hunter and a force to be reckoned with.
VEX:
She’s the latest addition to the classes because, apart from her, we have seen all of the other classes in one way or another in previous titles. Vex has access to every elemental type, which means she can morph her weapons to every element she wants. Which means her weaponry is highly adaptive. Her dead ringer allows her to make clones of herself, which can distract the enemies as well as give them chunk damage. Her spectral cat can teleport, do area damage, as well as soak some damage, and provide utility. All in all, a great ally to her.
Due to all of these things, she is extremely powerful and a versatile vault hunter. She covers a whole lot of bases while being one character. Her ability to adapt elements to enemy types, summon clones, or have an ally to give area damage makes her a no-brainer to pick.
A-tier:
Harlowe:
Now, for the A tier, Harlowe is the solid choice because she is the IT guy of the game. Her kit’s biggest selling point is the entanglement trait, which allows her to entangle multiple enemies and give them group damage, which is great when you’re in the corner and up against a group of enemies. Her chroma accelerator lets her fire an unstable energy pocket that drifts through the enemies and can be detonated to give radiation damage to an entire area. Which is again a great thing for crowd fighting.
Although the reason why she is considered A-tier and not S-tier is that Rafa and Vex have a lot of damaging ability, and they are very versatile classes, in comparison, Harlowe is not that great because she almost always relies on her entanglement or AoE setup to get more damage on single enemies, which makes her feel weaker than two.
B-tier:
Amon:
Last class is the amon, and he is a hardened warrior and the only survivor of the vault monster attack. Due to that, his biggest selling point is his ability to survive; he has the largest health by far compared to any other vault monster. He is a monster when it comes to close-range fights. His action skills, Onslaughter, Crucible, and Scourge, give him the ability to be on the faces of his enemies and hammer them or ax their guts out, or give them a befitting punch on their face, and all of these give a very high damage to the enemies.
The reason, however, he is considered the weakest class of the game is because, firstly, he is a slow-moving character, which means if he gets cornered, he is almost done for. Secondly, his kits revolve around close-quarter fights, which means that he is not great at mid-range or long-range fights, which is another weak point for him.
💡 Tip: If you haven’t picked up Borderlands 4 yet, check out Eneba — they often have great deals on game keys and editions across all platforms, which is perfect if you’re just getting started or looking to upgrade.
Conclusion:
The point of any game is to have fun, especially when it is a story-based game. Now, just because a certain class is not on the s-tier does not mean that it is not fun to play with. So, while there are clearly better vault hunters than others. It shouldn’t matter to you that much because, at the end of the day, Borderlands is supposed to be a fun game to play rather than being a task to perfect.
