Apex Legends: Learn to Play Mad Maggie

Hey everyone! Today, I’m going to discuss Mad Maggie, the new Apex Legends hero added in season 12.

She’s an offensive Legend with an interesting kit and passive ability. Mad Maggie is easily one of the best characters to play in Apex Legends, and this Ultimate Guide will have you terrorizing squads in no time.

Today, I’m going to get you on your way to mastering the rebel warlord, Mad Maggie. This fast-paced action Legend was first introduced back during season 8 when Fuse came into the games but she is now back and here to stay with her aggressive assault type of play. She is an aggressive pick who wants to get up in the faces of her enemies. Let us kick it off with a brief overview of her abilities before we get to those playstyle examples and tips.

Let’s start with her Passive ability. We are going to have warlord’s Ire. This passive gives her the ability to temporarily highlight enemies through walls that you have damaged. The second part of the passive is increased movement speed while you do have a shotgun equipped.

The movement speed is the same as having your weapons stored, meaning that she can run around with the shotgun out with no penalty. The scan only lasts for about a second after the damage ends but it applies to her abilities and her bullets. This is helpful as it gives extra info when your abilities land and lets you predict enemy movement a bit better while you are in gunfights.

The movement speed buff when using the shorties allows Mad Maggie to move at the same speed you normally would with your fists out, which allows her to move at max speed while still being combat-ready.

Tactical Ability (Riot Drill)

As for Maggie’s tactical ability, this is going to be the riot drill. This is a drill that Maggie can stick into pretty much any object or surface to damage enemies that are on the other side of it. The total amount of damage the drill can do is decent at 160 damage over 9 seconds. This ability has a pretty quick cooldown of only 22 seconds.

It is worth mentioning that the ability will not be able to attach to enemy players as it will just drop to the ground. The maximum depth of the drill is around 11 to 13 meters and a huge thing to know is that the actual distance it will do damage depends on the object it is attached to and the number of the drill showing at the time you use the ability. It is a pretty crucial part of her tactical ability as this can sometimes lead to inconsistencies.

This ability is great at pushing enemies out of cover. Mad Maggie fires a drill that attaches to the first target it hits. Unleashing flames on the other side. Think of this as more of a concentrated thermite that you can use to burn enemies on the other side of any object.

Keep in mind that the thicker the object the less distance the damage will travel. So, if you throw it at a big box then it will not reach as far on the other side as if you were to use it on a slim wall. This ability forces the enemies to choose between dying depending on their armor or moving to a different position.

Tips for Tactical Ability

  • You don’t want to be using it carelessly due to the long cooldown.
  • You should look to lead most fights with it. It does great damage and if you see an opportunity to push an enemy out of cover or a third party a gibby bubble then you should always look to use it.
  • Going down without trying to get some type of use out of her ability damage should rarely happen.
  • Think of this ability as Fuse’s kit. While she is much faster than Fuse, you want to get the most out of the damage that’s built right into your abilities.
  • If you are not getting any damage or scan info from your drill then you are missing out on a lot of value for Maggie’s kit.

Ultimate Ability (Wrecking Ball)

Mad Maggie’s Ultimate ability is Wrecking Ball. This is exactly as it sounds a ball. She can’t throw out in front of her to damage and stun anyone who comes in contact with the ball for a brief moment. It also releases speed-boosting pads on the ground that she and anyone else can utilize to run up onto a team escape or just rotate around with the damage.

The ball will do a mediocre 20 per hit and it explodes after it does come in contact with an enemy player. This ability is not about the damage though, it’s more about the stun effect it dishes out in conjunction with the speed boost as it drops down.

It does have a very quick 90-second cooldown timer and the speed pads will stay on the ground for 60 or so seconds. The speed boost you receive is a nice 30% boost and it does last for three seconds once you do leave those pads. The speed boost will not stack with another speed effect like the stem of Octane.

Finally, that ball will explode if it does not come in contact with any enemy. The physical range of the ball is based on the number of bounces and this is generally capped out around something like 90 to 100 meters, give or take a little bit depending on the train or if it hits players or objects. Keep in mind that this ability will bounce off any short of walls creating havoc in tight spaces or finding enemies at unsuspecting angles.

Tips for Ultimate

  • Use it often as the cooldown is only 90 seconds meaning you can get quite a few of these off in a game.
  • If you are running into a fight and want some extra speed or even escaping a bad situation, just throw it out.
  • Look for creative angles to bounce this thing into fights and find useful instances for your speed buffs for your squad.
  • If you see a decent opportunity to get used to wrecking ball then let it rip.
  • While Maggie’s scan is nothing compared to Bloodhound or Crypto, that little bit of info can go a long way.
  •  Let’s say, you peek at the enemy, deal some damage, and then go back into cover. This little scan can not only help you be aggressive with perfect info but it can also give you some insight into what the player’s plans are. This type of information can help you come out on top in fights and better predict enemy actions.

Why Choose Mad Maggie

If you are wondering, why you should or would want to pick up Mad Maggie over another Legend then keep in mind that she provides an aggressive type of playstyle that will enhance any shotgun lover. Additionally, she’s clutch when it does come to late game with her drill as she can mess up players by forcing movement.

Playstyle Tips

Mad Maggie’s abilities are pretty simple on paper but there are some great ways that you can take advantage of her kit to outplay your opponents and there are a lot of tips that I’m going to cover.

Shotty Sprint

Since Mad Maggie runs faster with shotguns. You more or less should always run around with a shotgun out. When you are using one there’s no difference between this and having your weapon secured. If you do run up onto someone and you do need to use your non-shotgun weapon then just swap your weapon.

Strafe Fighting

Second, this is to not underestimate the power of Mad Maggie’s strafing speed when using shotguns in fights. Much like fighting an octane while they are stimming, players are just not used to this type of speed and you can take advantage of this. It’s not as drastic as that Octane stem but it’s still wildly effective.

Drill Function

Into Mad Maggie’s tactical, drill now it’s a bit tricky in terms of how it actually functions. It does damage to those camping or held up behind objects but the distance the damage hits enemies depends on what the number or the indicator says when you do release that drill.

This drill can often get stuck on some sort of texture glitch or not breach an object properly, so it’s important that understand what you are sending the drill into. If the drill says that the object is going through something like 0.05 meter then it means that it’s stuck on something and it is not going to go through that object.

The reason this matter is that even though the beam might visually show it going through say six to eight meters. It will not do any damage because it did not breach the object in the game’s mind.

Covering

While the tactical goes drill goes on a straight line, you can’t cover doorways to prevent enemies from either entering or exiting areas without taking any damage. If you line up on the same wall as the door then you can send your drill out at an angle to cover the entire doorway where players would go through.

Force Movement

Likewise, by covering door areas or open areas, you can break doors that enemies are camped behind to force them out of that cover or that doorway.

End Game

Mad Maggie’s drill is actually stellar during the end game. When enemies get three-stacked behind objects then you want to use that drill to force them into the open. This works pretty similar to a grenade but you get to keep them out of their cover for an entire 9 seconds as that drill is going off.

Gibby Counter

It seems Gibraltar has another counter to the dome shield besides Crypto’s emp. While the drill will not completely force enemies to get out of the entire dome, you can use the drill on the dome shield to force enemies to move some.

Audio Decoy

One thing that is becoming more and more prevalent in Apex Legends is using audio to counter the already poor audio. You can drop Mad Maggie’s tactical drill during a revive to both cover angles and help block out some of that audio when you are doing a revive.

Placement

If someone is in a corner then put the drill down next to the corner, they are camping in rather than right on them. This will force them to take some damage and then have to move into the physical drill beam to escape taking even more damage. The actual physical part of the drill where the beam comes out will damage those adjacent to it and you can use this information to damage players that are not necessarily in the path of the drill’s beam.

Peek Damage

Another way to use that drill is around corners of objects and ledges. Similar to the door cover method, you can drop your drill right at the corner or edge of objects and walls to stop enemies from both sides peeking and head peeking. You can also put that drill in someone’s retreat path so that when they are backing up after peeking then they will take additional damage from your drill.

Floors and Walls

The drill will go through more than just floors as well. You can place that drill down to force enemies to move when they are camping a roof above you or even a floor under you. A basic way you can use Mag Maggie’s wrecking ball is to push through an area of openness or to retreat with a bit more speed. Drop that ultimate ball and then quickly follow the speed notes to give yourself some rapid transportation. While it’s good to make a play off of the ball, don’t be afraid to just use it to rotate. The ball has a quick 90-second cooldown which means you should be using it as much as possible.

Breaching

Mad Maggie’s Ultimate will break the doors so it can be used to breach buildings or catch camping enemies off guard. It’s also worth noting that the wrecking ball in smaller rooms or hallways is a decent area to use it as you will be able to connect fairly easily to enemies and do some damage and stun them and displace them.

Move enemies

Use the ball to displace enemies much like the tactical drill can force enemies out to cover. The ultimate wrecking ball can do this as well since the ball does bounce enemies if they do get tapped by it.

B-Hop Heal

It’s also worth noting that while you are on the speed nodes, you can actually do a pretty decent bunny hop heal much like you can do when you are Octane stimming. Just be sure to hit a note or two before you start going into that bunny hop heels.

Thermites

One thing you can utilize as Mad Maggie is to rock some thermites. Enemies will continually be tracked with their passive as they are burning and it’s a nice way to get some continuous scanning on them.

Wattson

If you don’t know Wattson’s ultimate pylon will zap out Maggie’s drill, so take care when using it around this.

Drill Combo

If you are unaware, you can actually shoot while using the drill at the same time. This can make some scenarios to combo a drill up with your bolts to damage enemies and then rapidly prevent them from retreating or taking cover.

You can also aim down sights with something like a sniper or a longer-range scope to shoot the drill at long ranges. The only way to put the drill down when it’s already out is to melee or climb onto a wall as swapping weapons will just switch your guns as you fire at the same time as using the drill. As you notice there are quite a few ways to use Mad Maggie’s abilities even though they are pretty simple. The biggest thing is to be creative with them as the timers are very generous and they come back.

Best Weapons for Mad Maggie

Let’s talk about the weaponry. It’s pretty self-explanatory that Maggie should prioritize shotgun usage to get the best out of her passive. You absolutely want to use any sort of mid-to-close hybrid weapon to pair up with those shotguns. Something like an alternator or R-31, maybe even hemlock. They’re all really solid at making mid-range plays and they can be used at close range as well.

The main reason for this type of play is so that you can injure someone with your mid to close-range hybrid type of weapon and then drop your ultimate on the ground and chase them down to make a play with that speed boost.

Legend combos

Legend Combos with Mad Maggie is not overly complex but I do have a few recommendations for you. The first is going to be Bangalore with Mad Maggie because if Maggie can’t get her passive of highlighting enemies to activate when someone is in that smoke, you are more or less going to get a little bit more awareness than everyone else.

In addition, you can try out Octane as you can throw Maggie’s ultimate on the launch pad and it will let you have a little bit more speed when coming out of the pad as the ultimate wrecking ball will be sent pretty far out there. It will be semi-situational but it can lead to some interesting rotation options and even having the ball land on the enemy team could pretty clutch to stun or displace enemies.

Ranking Mad Maggie in Meta

Many new players have a common question where does Mad Maggie rank in the current Meta of Apex Legends? I put her pretty much in the same vein as a Legend like season 11’s Ash. Mad Maggie will be a really great aggressive Legend who can be a lot of fun to play in pubs but on the grand scheme of competitive or upper-tier rank, she probably will not be overly used in the long run.

She is in the top half of the Legends in the game which would give her somewhere around the top eight to top nine Legends in the game. If you are wondering, she is viable in arenas or the current LTM control as all of her abilities are effective in those two modes.

While you’re a really aggressive pick, Maggie doesn’t have a Wraith Phase or an Octane stim to look to book it out of danger. The extra speed while holding a shotty is nice and you can use her ball to run from danger. You have plenty of tools to bust your way in but not a whole lot of ways to save yourself if things go wrong. This is needed or else she would have been even more powerful than she is but understanding this limitation of hers is very important. If you overcome a fight and you don’t really have any way to back out except winning the fight and hoping for some help from your squad. So be cautious when committing to fights. Play your life effectively and when opportunities open up then be aggressive and lead the charge.
