Riot Games Layoffs Some League of Legends Game Devs

Riot Games co-founder, Marc Merrill recently uploaded an article on X/Twitter announcing the ‘changes’ the company made to their teams and how they work to improve League experience for the long-term. The title of the article is “An Update on How We’re Evolving League”, but the changes to the team (Game Devs) are laying off some of the roles from different departments.

Riot Games made a decision to eliminate some roles (team) from League of Legends to improve the experience

The article mentions, “We’ve made the tough decision to eliminate some roles”, further explaining the reasoning, “This isn’t about reducing headcount to save money—it’s about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great for another 15 years and beyond.” Moreover, the article also mentions that the “League team will eventually be even larger than it is today as we develop the next phase of League.”

The Devs who have been fired from their roles in developing and maintaining League are now being supported with a “severance package that includes a minimum of six months’ pay, annual bonus, job placement assistance, health coverage, and more.”

In addition to the article, Marc Merrill talked about the team size and budget and how these aren’t the right ways to judge whether a team will be successful or not. In the comments of the article, Marc Miller explained, “Success isn’t about throwing more people or money at a challenge. We’ve seen small teams at Riot (and elsewhere) build incredible things, while large teams (both at Riot and elsewhere) miss the mark.”

How many jobs have been affected by Team Change of League in Riot Games

While the Article does not disclose any sort of numbers that are affected by this change, GamesIndustry.bizgot a statement from Riot Games confirming 32 layoffs. According to the statement, ‘27’ individuals are from the League Team, and ‘five’ are from the publishing side.

Despite this unexpected change, Marc Merrill ensures, “We’re investing heavily in solving today’s challenges faster while also building for the future.”
