Hello everyone, in this blog we will discuss what legacy credits in Overwatch 2 are, what they are good for, and how you can get them in your own account. Even if you have just started playing Overwatch 2 and don’t know much about the legacy credits or the game. Then this blog will be perfect for you. Because in this blog we will talk about a little history of the game. We will also look into the cosmetic side of the game.
As you might know, you can’t buy the legacy credits. As they have been discontinued since the launch of Overwatch 2. Now that confusion is out of the way, let’s go in-depth on legacy credit.
What are the Legacy Credits:
So in Overwatch 1 cosmetics were present and they were a pretty big part of the game. Since it had no battle pass or anything like that to provide cheaper skins to players. The only option that players had was to buy in-game credits and then you had to use this in-game currency to buy what skin you wanted. This part is still present in the game which is better because you know what you are getting for your money.
With the launch of Overwatch 2 and its being free-to-play. The credits that you added to your Overwatch 1 account get stuck in that account and are now worthless in that account. That is why they are called legacy credits. There’s a way around using these legacy credits to buy skins in Overwatch 2 which I will tell you later in the blog. Now keep in mind that you can’t earn or buy the legacy credits. You could only have them if you had them in your old Overwatch 1 account.
How to get the legacy credits:
Earning or buying legacy credits is not possible which I have made it very clear. But you can use your existing legacy credits to buy hero skins, guns, and other cosmetics. This will be a simple step-by-step guide and the process is very simple. So I don’t think that you would have any worries.
Step 1: Get logged into your old account:
Access your old account which has legacy credits that you want to use. You could log into it by using whatever platform you want. Like PC, console or whatever. (Check here in case you need to change your name in Overwatch 2)
Step 2: Scan the QR code:
After logging in you would see a QR code. Scan the QR code with your mobile and carefully follow the instructions.
Step 3: Enter the code you got from the console:
For security purposes now you would have to enter the code you are seeing on the monitor and now you have to enter that code into your smartphone. After entering the code you would have to connect either your existing Blizzard account or you would have to create a new account if you don’t have one.
Step 4. Merge the accounts on the next login:
After doing all of that. Make sure to log in again. After trying to log in on your account blizzard will ask you to confirm merging the accounts. agree to them and your old overwatch 1 account and your current overwatch 2 account will be merged. If you play on multiple platforms then you should do it on every platform.
Blizzard does not allow you to have multiple accounts on the same platform. You would have to do this merge to get back your credits.
And you’re done.

What will you get after merging the accounts:
Apart from legacy credits, you would get a lot of things by merging your accounts. I will list a few of them
- achievements
- Your old in-game settings.
- Hero gallery.
- Your old stats.
- Old skins (if you had any).
& much more. Keep in mind that the transfer of legacy credits can take time since it still has some issues. But you will get them in your account eventually.
What you can do with legacy Credits:
Now if you have got the legacy credits in your account by doing what I have just told you to do and now are wondering what should do with them. So here’s what they are good for. You could buy old hero skins. You can go to the hero gallery and pick out any unlocked character. Now choose what cosmetics item you want to buy. Every item that has a white currency symbol can be bought with legacy credits.
If you want to know your legacy credit balance then you could go to the top right of the main menu and you’ll see an icon just beside overwatch coins. Click on that icon you will get to see your total legacy credits.
Replacement of the legacy credits:
You might be wondering what has replaced the legacy credits. Two things came as a replacement for legacy credits.
- Battle pass:
As I have told earlier a battle pass is a cheaper way for players to get skins and other cosmetics. Not only that it also allows the players to unlock new heroes (You can check the top 11 Overwatch 2 heroes here). There are two types of battle passes, one which is and doesn’t have many things in it. The other one is paid which provides more value to the players. The premium battle pass can be bought for 1000 ow2 coins. Which, depending on where you live, costs around 10 US dollars.
The difference between the free battle pass and the premium one is that the free one only provides a handful of new skins and value addition to the players. But the premium one has much more content in it. Also in a free battle pass, you would have to play the game rigorously to unlock some of the items.
- Overwatch 2 coins:
These are a direct replacement of the legacy credits. You have to buy the battle pass with these coins and anything related to the cosmetic side of the game is related to the overwatch coins. Battle Pass provides some of the skins in the game but you could also buy skins you love in the item shop by using the overwatch coins. Items appearing in the shop are random and they are more expensive than battle passes.
As a free-to-play game overwatch had to have these types of micro-transactions to keep the game alive. Also, these skins do not affect the gameplay at all, they are just cool to look at and they somewhat boost your confidence but other than that they do not affect the game even a bit.
Now there are two things that you could do to earn these coins. The first one is to just straight out buy them with your credit card. The second thing that you could do is to participate in battle pass challenges.
There are weekly challenges that you could complete to earn the coins. The game offers around 11 different challenges each week. You would have to complete atleast 4 of these weekly challenges to earn these coins. The total number of coins you could earn by doing this is 60. While this is a very low payout for such an amount of effort considering that any item in the shop starts from upward of 1000 coins. So these weekly challenges are not the best thing to earn coins.
