Hey everyone! Today, I’m going to discuss Fuse, the new Apex Legends hero added in season 8.
He is an aggressive legend with an exciting kit and an Ultimate ability. Since I’m a professional Apex player working with Apex Boosting Squad here at Immortal Boost, I need to know how to play every Legend so that if clients ask me to play a specific one, I should be ready.
I’m going to get you on your way to mastering the explosive artist Fuse. Fuse is a truly unique Legend, and there’s a fair amount of stuff for us to cover between all of his abilities, some in-game examples, and ranking him in the meta of Apex Legends. Let’s waste no more time and jump right into it.
First, let’s briefly review all of Fuse’s abilities before discussing specific in-game examples of using Fuse effectively. If you want to master the defensive, check out Legend, our Master Catalyst guide.
Grenadier (Passive Ability)
One of the most underrated parts of Fuse is his passive ability, Grenadier. This ability allows Fuse to hold two or more grenades per inventory slot, making it very easy to stack up a load of grenades for your enemies. In addition, Fuse can throw the grenades further, faster, and more accurately.
He gets to conserve more bag space for grenades due to the class he is in. The passive ability also lets you sling grenades via his grenade arm, which will last much faster, more precisely, and with more lethality from range when using grenades.
Knuckle Cluster (Tactical Ability)
The ability launches a cluster bomb that continuously explodes air-burst explosives on impact and does a fair amount of damage for just a tactical ability. The damage this ability does can vary, but if you stick an enemy with the cluster, you will do about ten damage and then an additional 40 or so damage from the cluster explosions for a maximum of 50 damage.
This knuckle cluster ability is an excellent way to remove many enemy traps, Mirage decoys, and other obstacles.
Mother Lode (Ultimate)
Fuse’s ultimate ability is called the Mother Lode. This launches a ring of fire and bombardment in a motor-type fashion. It encircles the ground in the ring of fire, which does a fair amount of damage to those who walk into this fire. On top of the damage, the Ultimate also has a heavy slowdown effect on enemies, which is similar to the Ultimate of Bangalore.
This slowdown also applies to teammates, but teammates will not take damage from this Ultimate ability. The damage breakdown of this motor is as follows: You will deal 35 damage for stepping into the fire and then an additional 8 points of burn damage for five ticks, for a total of 40 burn damage, which adds to 75 total damage.
If enemies stay inside the fire after the initial 35 damage tick, then they will take 12 more points of damage per tick while standing in the fire. This means that if they do not leave the fire and stay in it, they can and will die quickly.
Remember, once a player is trapped inside this fire ring, and if there is no way to escape, then the enemy can’t exit the ring unharmed, and players should be taking advantage of enemies that are trapped inside.
The biggest thing to know about the motor is that it does launch from Fuse’s position in an arc type of travel. This means that the motor is fairly useless in smaller buildings unless Fuse wants to take some damage to himself in a last-minute attempt by utilizing this Ultimate as a panicked move.
Just like Pathfinder or Bangalore, Fuse is a very aggressive, outdoor type of Legend due to his Ultimate and Tactical ability.
Tips for Passive Ability
Let us now start discussing some play style information and tips for Fuse to use his Passive ability effectively. The biggest thing about the passive ability, for me, is just how fast and far you can throw grenades. There are many ways to use this passive ability in your favour that other Legends just can’t compete with.
You can throw grenades further, which means you can almost always use grenades to get enemies out of cover from any range. You can also send two to four grenades in a pattern that enemies will nearly always get hit by.
Throwing grenades to the left of a rock and then to the right of the rock as they are rotating away is a great way to catch enemies that aren’t on top of their moving game, off guard, and get a lot of damage or even knock just from a few grenades. Fuse’s ability to launch grenades faster and hold more grenades makes this type of play which is more effective when playing with Fuse rather than any other legend in the game.
While grenades are a great way to get enemies out from behind cover in open areas, they can also be used to expel enemies from buildings. The fact that Fuse launches grenades faster and further means Fuse can launch grenades horizontally at a much greater distance and does not need arc grenades as much as all the other Legends in the game.
Fuse can send those grenades much further indoors, and this can and should be used to get enemies out of buildings or just to create chaos indoors.
Tips for Tactical Ability
There are a lot of things Fuse’s tactical can be good for many of them have to do with not just dealing damage with the Knuckle Cluster but rather ways to counter the enemy’s abilities. For starters, the knuckle cluster is one of the best ways to take out rampart barriers that are fully assembled. These clusters do massive damage and will take out barriers nearly instantly.
Second to this ability, the knuckle cluster is superb at destroying mirage decoys either from his tactical or ultimate. A quick shot from Fuse right after Mirage uses his Ultimate, will make easy work and destroy the majority of all of his decoys. Much like Rampart’s barriers, a knuckle cluster will also take out the fences of Wattson with ease but it will not bypass the effects of Wattson’s Ultimate, and it will stop Fuse’s tactical and ultimate ability.
The knuckle cluster is a great way to cause damage to enemy black holes by shooting it in the direction of a black hole. This will then get absorbed by the black hole and deal a fair amount of damage. However, keep in mind this will not do enough damage to destroy a black hole on its own.
The final few things to know is that if you do shoot a cluster at enemy Caustic gas traps that are already placed then it will not destroy the traps but it will just detonate the gas like a normal grenade or bullet would do. You can also destroy a Crypto drone with this ability but since the drone is usually mobile, it is a difficult thing to do and I don’t really recommend wasting the tactical on this drone.
The tactical will also take totems of Revenant and black markets of Loba.
Other Tactical Tips
Cluster is a great way to make enemies panic and move out of cover much like Fuse’s passive ability with the grenades. You are getting this cluster quite often and it should be used as much as possible. When it comes to this cluster the enemies will be panicking and they will be moving out of the way of it, exposing themselves when sometimes it may just be better to take and get a partial cluster hit.
Keep this mind that when playing against a Fuse, the damage isn’t as bad as a grenade. Even it does seem worse due to the amount of explosions, and the excessive noises that it does make. The other thing to know about the cluster is that it is a great way of breaching doorways.
A quick stick to a door will make very quick work of a door and basically blow it up instantly and this will allow you to get shots on a team that could be camping up in a building or blocking that doorway.
Likewise, opening a fight by launching a cluster and following it up with a few shots is a great way to make quick work of enemies. Especially early on in games when enemies might not have shields yet or they only have white shields.
Tips for Ultimate ability
Let’s discuss the tips to use Fuse’s Ultimate ability which is Mother Lode. In my opinion, this ring of fire is difficult to be decent with in ways that allow it to be effective. However, when you do get this ring of fire placed in a spot that is clutch, it can be nearly impossible to counter, especially if you are stacking up your team comps.
The ring of fire has the most effectiveness being in the outdoor areas but it can be used in larger buildings if you are indoors. Just take care not to launch the motor and hit the ceiling right above your head and cause some damage to yourself.
Ultimate Scenario # 1
The first way I like to use the motor is in outdoor choke points, in my opinion. The motor, in a lot of ways, is better for territorial control rather than dealing damage. For example, if you’re in a two-on-two situation and if the team is coming from the choke point in the center of King’s Canyon then you can drop the motor in a quick shot directly on the enemies. Instant panic sets in for them, and they try to run out of the ring at the back of it.
Unfortunately for them, it’s a little bit too late. You’ll notice that they take massive damage, and all during this, you and your teammates are focusing on them, and they go down extremely fast. This, in my eyes, is the most effective way to be using this motor if you are stacking it with any other of your teammate’s abilities. The ring completely buries the choke points in fire and will do exactly what you expect.
Ultimate Scenario # 2
This ring of fire is a great tool for crowd control on enemies and keeping enemies trapped. All the while this ability can give you valuable seconds to make a push on enemies that are disoriented and blinded by the flame wall. You can drop the motor from a decent range away and then you can run up on your enemy teams.
It looks like that between the noise and the fire in the visual block, you can get the push on the enemies and close the gap that eventually leads to a win.
Other Ultimate Tips
While above strategies are two of the bigger situations where the Mother Lode excels. I also like to use it to control parts of the map. Much like a Bangalore Ultimate or a Caustic gas grenade, I will position this ultimate in key locations to prevent either an enemy team from pushing me or to force them to rotate away, that will be in my favor.
The Ultimate, in some ways, seems like an offensive move meant to deal damage. It has a lot more utility in just controlling the map in creative ways that can play into your hand. You must know how effective a Fuse can be at range. It’s insane how far the grenades and ultimates can be used.
For example, if you’re just outside of salvage and you destroy these teams fighting with a well-placed bombardment and some super long-range grenades. You then will be able to follow this up with a well-coordinated push due to the enemies playing right into your hand. Fuse has a lot more range than you might think.
Tips on when not to use Ultimate
Let’s discuss a couple of ways not to use the ultimate. For starters, I don’t recommend using the ultimate inside of the building or in areas that have a big change in height. It just doesn’t seem to work well and enemies have multiple easy ways to jump out of this ring of fire or avoid damage completely.
This brings us to the fact that it is very easy to jump over the fire if there is any sort of change in height or something for enemies to jump over. For example, your enemy can completely surprise you by jumping up on a shallow rock and then jumping right over the fire, and right over you.
Not to use the motor in panic situations, inside of the buildings. There will be a few times when you think a panic door motor will help you out, but it will cause damage to you. Finally, Fuse’s motor seems like it would be great to do damage, and it is, but I am finding more Fuse’s I counter, and the more players that are learning Fuse, the more I think that Fuse’s abilities, both ultimate tactical are better suited to be used tactical solutions of zone control.
While the motor is fairly quick, it is still very possible to avoid the ring of fire, and unless the enemy is standing in one position, they can easily walk out of it or run out of the way of this ultimate.
The power to third-party with this ring of fire is also something to keep in mind and it can be extremely advantageous to use in Apex Legends.
Fuse Play Style
All of the above tips will help you get started practicing your Fuse player where you will begin to master this Legend when you understand your role on a squad. Fuse’s play style is very unique and not having any mobility in his kit can be tough for players used to playing the faster offensive Legends like Octane and Wraith.
The fact his kit is built to be aggressive, bursting down the doors and softening up the enemy with explosions, yet he is very vulnerable if he’s caught in close-range gunfights. His animations on his abilities are rather long and they excel at initiating a fight at range. So, getting a feel for animation times and learning when you can afford to use them is going to help you out a ton in the long run.
You want to be sure to play closely with your squad whenever possible and be cautious of where you’re pushing on the map. Fuse’s kit requires you to know enemy locations as he wants to have time to use his abilities before engaging in a full-on gunfight. You should be looking to assist in your team’s pushes acting as support for your team.
You’re looking to stay outdoors so that you can make use of all Fuse’s abilities. Preferably keeping a good point to have clear sight lines for your launchers. If your squad is taking a fight then utilize your extra grenades and damaging abilities often. This can be used to not only deal damage but also to split enemies up within a fight.
Best Legends Pairing
To play Fuse in Apex Legends, you must know what Legends might pair up well with Fuse. For starters, I can’t think of anything more toxic than a team that gets trapped by Fuse’s Ultimate and then a Caustic who throws a gas grenade in the center of this ring of fire.
If the enemy team has no Gibraltar or Horizon is more than likely going to end them very quickly. Either they stay in the gas grenade and die or they run into the ring of fire after taking gas damage and they end up nearly knocked or already knocked.
Moving on from this, you can also throw a black hole in there to simultaneously to either of these ultimates and it makes for a trio of Legends that are Horizon, Caustic, and Fuse. These Legends can make any team an extremely deadly force.
Another one or two Legends that I can’t see pairing up well with Fuse and his Ultimate is going to be Bangalore’s Ultimate and Gibraltar’s Ultimate. These Ultimates do massive damage, and if enemies are trapped in the ring of fire, then this is going to work in your favor.
The only Legend that I can’t see being viable to pair up with Fuse is Octane. The ability to drop that launch pad and land on enemies trapped in the ring of fire can be very deadly fun.
Ranking Fuse in the Meta
The main question arises among the players are that how Fuse ranks in the meta of Apex Legends. While any Legends can be good to a certain extent, is running Fuse going to be better than running Horizon, Wraith, Caustic, Bangalore, and a few other Legends?
While Fuse has some great viability and does shake up the way the game is played, at the moment I just don’t see Fuse being any better than any of these existing Legends. Fuse is in the middle of the pack somewhere between the top 8 to top 12 Legends in the game.
