Samoa Map Overview

Samoa is a new Control map where you’ll fight in a gleaming city, on a tropical beach, and inside a volcano. This map features three smaller maps that are all in the same location. Both teams are attackers and they must fight to capture and control the main objective point in the center of the map. Samoa includes geography and terrain, leading to different team compositions and strategies in each round.

Players battle to capture three control points:

  • Beach
  • Downtown
  • Volcano

Samoa has three control points that offer distinct environments in Overwatch 2. These range from a geothermal volcano to a downtown area and a tropical beach. Keller noted that each area is unique thanks to different level designers, which means for each three points a separate designer was assigned.

“This is the first time on a Control map that we’ve ever had three level designers work on the map at the same time. So, we gave each point to a different designer on the team,” Keller explained. “So, each one of them has their distinct gameplay personality and they all feel unique from each other.”

Samoa map: Beach

One of these points is a beach with an inviting island atmosphere. There’s a forest on one side and water on one side.

“So, the control point is sunken down. When you come to it from the main route, you’ll head down [the] stairs to get to it,” Keller revealed. “And it can be really dangerous. You don’t just want to rush ahead as the tank into the control point because you’re just going get kind of like eaten up by the enemy team.”

Due to the high ground, the location has various strategic angles. Players can find multiple sheltered areas and side routes for evading or stalling out their enemies when they descend and as a result, this leads to interesting team fights.

The beach offers a two-layered setting, with the point located on the lower beach level, surrounded by high ground at Overwatch 2. Individual rooms and flanking routes provide chances for small skirmishes, but the contained nature of these rooms makes them awful for extended team fights.

Samoa’s key features are its versatility and offer access to different team compositions. The team must try to get control of the central area which will provide flexibility in terms of rotation. Due to the sightlines and cover options, spam compositions can find success here. Heroes like Sojourn and Soldier can maintain their mobility and that will be a valuable asset here.

Samoa map: Downtown

Next up, we have Downtown and that’s the second point on the Samoa map in Overwatch 2. Downtown is reminiscent of other cityscape maps like Numbani. It’s characterized by high grounds, open spaces, and towering buildings. Downtown’s circular objective is surrounded by an outer ring of buildings and offset circular walls.

There are two high-ground areas adjacent to the point, each with its perk. The high ground closest to the point provides limited sightlines and safety, while the other one is lower but gives more safe rooms and easy access to flanks.

Heroes like Widowmaker and Ashe took advantage of these high grounds and they are solid pick rates because of their long-range capabilities.

Samoa map: Volcano

The volcano is the third point on the Samoa map in Overwatch 2, located in the heart of an active volcano. There’s a mega pack near the lava and it is a dangerous spot due to the environmental kills. The point is reminiscent of other control maps and is relatively small with the pits in the middle that allow creative escapes and repositioning.

The terrain features high ground and plenty of cover that provides opportunities for heroes like Genji, Winston, and Hanzo. Queen Rush or Zarya rush comps can also thrive here.

Sigma: Just like Reinhardt, Sigma excels at covering Samoa’s narrow pathways with his Kinetic Grasp and Experimental Barrier. He also has potent crowd-control abilities in Gravitic Flux and Accretion, with the latter being significantly effective when used from the map’s choke points and high ground.

Sojourn

Sojourn is capable of dealing with snipers and nearby enemies, when empowered by her Overclock ultimate because Sojourn’s versatile railgun inflicts consistent high damage. Her power slide allows her to quickly reach many of Samoa’s vantage points and enemy sightlines. Disruptor shot provides her with heavy area-based damage that deals the enemies in the map’s choke points and also snares enemies for space control.

Genji

To quickly maneuver through Samoa’s numerous flanking routes and dispatch key enemy targets in Overwatch 2, Genji can use Cypber-agility and swift strike. Genji’s Swift strike and Dragonblade allow him to quickly tear through enemies in team fights around the map’s choke points and objectives.

Baptiste: Baptiste offers potent area-based healing in Samoa’s cramped terrain with Regenerative Burst and Biotic Launcher while fortifying his team’s positioning with Amplification Matrix and Immortality Field. To provide him with better angles for healing allies and shooting foes, he can also access the map’s high ground with Exo Boost.

Lucio

Lucio gives more mobility with the help of Amp it up and Speed boost and that allows them to secure the payload and close the gap with critical enemy targets faster in Overwatch 2. With Sound Barrier and Healing Boost, he also provides a lot of healing and survivability in team fights. Lucio’s Soundwave is also useful for shoving priority targets into corners to isolate them and push away threats.

Alternative Tanks

Orisa: Orisa is a great alternative Tank for both attacking and defending teams on Samoa because she has a well-balanced kit. Javelin Spin and Fortify allow her to efficiently absorb damage, with the latter also capable of disrupting enemy positioning and blocking projectiles. You can use her Terra Surge and Energy Javelin for crowd control and it is effective when used around the map’s choke points and objectives.

Roadhog: Roadhog is also a must-pick strong, aggressive Tank in Samoa. His Scrap Gun and Chain Hook can quickly pick off key enemy targets, giving his team a numbers advantage in most engagements. To push and pull enemies toward the map’s numerous environmental hazards, he can use Chain Hook and Whole Hog.

D.Va: D.Va is also a must-pick alternative Tank in Samoa. She quickly bursts down foes in the map’s narrow corridors with Micro Missiles and Fusion Cannons and also protects her team from projectiles with Defense Matrix. Her Boosters also work in Sanctum, which lets her easily shove foes into the control point’s pitfall. When positioned properly along Samoa’s control points and choke points, her Self-Destruct can also be a devastating ultimate.

Winston and Wrecking Ball: These two are potent alternative Tanks in Samoa due to their disruptive capability and high mobility. Wrecking Ball excels at disrupting teams, space control with Piledriver and Roll, and neglecting areas with Minefield. Winston offers his disruption with Jump Pack and Primal Rage and a respectable defensive tool in Barrier Projector.

Alternative Damage

Soldier: 76: Soldier: 76 is a well-rounded Damage pick for attacking and defending teams as he has potent Hitscan with excellent burst damage with Helix Rockets and Heavy Pulse Rifle. He can also quickly maneuver and reposition around Samoa with Sprint which let him flank from multiple angles and set up devastating Tactical Visor plays from the map’s high ground.

Widowmaker: Widowmaker is another strong marksman pick for defending teams. She easily picks off crucial enemy targets from afar with Widow’s Kiss while providing vital enemy information with Infra-Sight by reaching the map’s vantage points and sightlines with Grappling Hook.

Hanzo: Hanzo is the best marksman for defending teams in Samoa. He can provide information about enemy positioning with Sonic Arrow and can land lethal charged headshots with his Storm Bow. His Dragonstrike ultimate is also capable of eliminating entire enemy teams when used along the map’s narrow pathways and choke points.

Reaper and Sombra: These two heroes are great alternative flankers on Samoa in Overwatch 2. Reaper can reach vantage points and flanking routes with Shadow Step before dealing massive damage up close with his Hellfire Shotguns and Death Blossom. Sombra maneuvers the map unseen with Translocator and Stealth and takes on a more disruptive role with her EMP and Hack.

Alternative Supports

Baptiste: Baptiste offers potent area-based healing in Samoa’s cramped terrain with Regenerative Burst and Biotic Launcher while fortifying his team’s positioning with Amplification Matrix and Immortality Field. To provide him with better angles for healing allies and shooting foes, he can also access the map’s high ground with Exo Boost.

Zenyatta: Zenyatta pairs well with Samoa’s high vantage points and long sightlines that let him efficiently mark teammates with Orb of Harmony and crucial enemy targets with Orb of Discord. To provide supportive fire and land devastating critical hits, he can also efficiently use Orbs of Destruction from these positions. For defending control points with its massive healing aura, his Transcendence is also great.
