How to Unlock Fishing in Destiny 2

Fishing is unlocked by completing the ‘Gone Fishing’ quest, a seasonal starting quest on Titan. The quest will require you to talk with Suraya Hawthorne to get the Fishing Tackle item and fill it with bait to take part in the fishing activity.

How to Get Bait

Bait is required to get higher-rarity fish from the fishing points in Destiny 2 but you can still fish without bait if you want to catch a normal green or blue fish. However, the main mechanic to get higher-rarity fish is dependent on how fast you interact when the fishing prompt appears, explained in the ‘How to Catch Fish’ section.

Bait drops are available in various Playlist Activities, Deep Dive (19 baits), and in open-world activities such as public open events and patrol missions, along with collecting Planetary materials (1 bait). The most efficient method to stock up on these baits quickly is by participating in heroic public events and patrol missions.

All Fishing Spots in Destiny 2

Fish locations are not consistently active, requiring you to wait for their activation, which will be indicated on your map. The general area of the pond will be marked, but pinpointing the exact pond within the location is your task. These ponds activate randomly, often appearing in new spots, although the overall pond areas remain consistent. These areas include:

  • The Cistern on Nessus
  • The Outskirts on EDZ
  • Miasma on the Throne World

Once a pond is active, heading to the indicated location on the map allows you to easily locate it by following the emitted beam of light. Activated ponds project a visible beam into the sky, guiding your way from a distance. To reach the active pond, ensure you travel along the coastline, tracing the beam of light until you find it.

How to Catch Fish in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 fishing is straightforward with these steps.

  • Find an active Pond Location on the map.
  • Use your fishing ability by pressing the interaction key relevant to your platform.
  • Cast your fishing line into the water at the pond.
  • Wait for a fish to latch onto the line; a prompt will appear on your screen.
  • Press the interaction button again when prompted to successfully catch the fish.

The speed of your reaction in pulling the line determines the rarity of the fish you catch. While a perfect catch doesn’t guarantee epic or exotic fish every time, you’ll consistently find Green and Blue Fish. Once the fish is hooked, you just need to approach it to pick it up.

Fish and equipment come in different rarities: green, blue, Legendary (purple), and Exotic (gold). You can view the list of fish categorized by location and rarity in the dedicated tab within Season Triumphs. Each time you cast your rod, it consumes one bait. If you press the interaction button before the float submerges, you’ll retrieve the hook without a fish, resulting in the loss of your bait without any catch.

Focused Fishing in Destiny 2

During your fishing endeavors, you’ll find the Focused Fish meter displayed at the lower left corner of your screen. This meter is shared among all your fishing companions at the current spot. The rate at which the meter fills up increases as you and your fellow Guardians fish. A fuller meter enhances your chances of catching a rare fish. Therefore, fishing in groups and bringing ample bait with you can speed up the Focused Fishing meter, increasing your likelihood of capturing rare catches.

How to Get Exotic Fish in Destiny 2

Both Legendary (purple) and Exotic (gold) fish are hard to catch due to a very short gap after the fish bite prompt. Your best bet to increase the chances of getting the exotic fish is getting a Perfect Catch. The perfect catch is done by pressing the interaction button as quickly as possible right after the fish bite. To further increase the chances, use the Focused Fish meter and get the perfect catches as many as you can while it is filling up to catch an exotic fish.

Fishing Rewards in Destiny 2

To claim fishing rewards, you must catch fish and deliver them to the aquarium situated in the H.E.L.M. This action can grant you Reckoning weapons, armor, exotics, and other items, the quality of which depends on the rarity of the fish you successfully catch.

Legendary Fish: Legendary gear, including Reckoning weapons, Sonar Station Reputation, Glimmer, or Deep Dive keys.

Exotic Fish: Exotic Items, including Ascendant Shards, Exotic armor, and all rewards from Legendary Fish.

Reckoning Weapons

Fishing serves as the primary means to obtain Reckoning weapons for The Season of the Deep. To target these weapons with your Deep Engram, you must first unlock them through fishing activities. None of these weapons are craftable so, you will have to spend time at the fishing spots to catch legendary or exotic fish to get the reckoning weapons.
