Apex Legends Ranking System Explained 2024: Ranks, Leaderboards, and More

Climbing up through the ladder of several rank tiers to be one of the top players in the game can be a lot grindy especially, in Apex Legends. Apex Legends is one of the most competitive games in recent years and its impact is still strong in 2023 with its 18th Season allowing players to grind to become one of the top players. However, players must learn how the Ranking System of Apex Legends works because it has one of the most ranking tiers including different divisions which can confuse players.

Here’s everything you need to know about how the Ranking System works in Apex Legends. Before we start with the guide, those who need help to push their rank can choose our apex boosting service.

Apex Legends Ranking System

The Ranking System in Apex Legends is based on three different subsequent systems, Provisional Matches, Ladder Points (LP), and Matchmaking Rating (MMR). As there is no required account level to start participating in the Ranked League of Apex Legends, players do have to play 10 Provisional Matches in the Ranked League. Provisional Matches are like placement matches through which the ranking system will record the overall performance of the players and place them in the appropriate rank, which works similarly to placement matches in VALORANT and Overwatch.

Apex Legends offers different modes including Trios, Duos, and Ranked League. Players can play any mode of their choice whenever they want but the Ranking System only records the performance in the Ranked League mode. It does not matter if the players dominate in either Trios or Duos if they don’t perform well against other players in the Ranked League, the system will place them in the low rank.

The subsequent system which sums up the performance of a player in the Ranked League is LP. It includes the Placement, Eliminations, Skills, and Ratings all in one field and provides the total Ladder Points (LP) which is necessary for ranking up in Apex Legends. Once players have played their 10 Provisional Matches and got placed in their appropriate ranks, every match they play on forward will reward them with LP based on their performance. If players perform well, they will earn more LP in the current rank but if they don’t play well and get eliminated early, they might lose LP from their current rank.

Lastly, the final and hidden system that records the Ratings Bonuses of a player in a match is the Matchmaking Rating (MMR). Every player who has unlocked their rank in Apex Legends has their own MMR which helps player figure out their actual rank. The base ranking system will place players based on Performance and LP but as players improve their gameplay or downgrade from their gameplay, the MMR will change and it will start putting players against the players with a similar MMR allowing them to find their actual rank.

All Ranks and leaderboards in Apex Legends

There are 8 ranks in Apex Legends’ Ranked Leagues in which players will get placed based on their performance in 10 Provisional Matches. Every rank excluding the Apex Predator (Highest Competitive Rank) has four subdivisions (1 – 4) and players will have to rank up through each subdivision to do a full rank up to the next rank. Each subdivision requires a total of 1,000 LP to rank up and the other way around to demote. However, ranking up will keep players at the total number of LP they earned from their rank-up game but demoting will place them on -500 LP on the demoted rank. So, it will not take 1 game to get back to the rank players were instead, they will have to earn 500 LP.

The Leaderboards in Apex Legends only include the players who have the Apex Predator Rank. These are the top 750 players from each region and each platform. This means every platform (PC, PlayStation, XBOX, and Switch) and region has different top 750 players who will match against each other or with a player with similar MMR to battle for the highest ranking in the Leaderboards.

Ranked Update Changings for Season 18

Most players who were promoted to Apex Predator rank were Diamond+ rank and it has been confirmed by EA themselves. Until Season 17, the LP system was the same and it gives the same earnings and deductions on matches but Season 18 has different earnings and deductions which will take more time for Diamond players to reach Apex Predator rank.

The Ranked changes in Season 18 of Apex Legends are the following.

How to Rank Up in Apex Legends

Ranking up in the Ranked Leagues is based on Ladder Points (LP) and each rank division requires 1,000 LP to be promoted to the next division or rank. However, four different factors are taken into consideration while calculating total LP gains in a ranked match. These factors are the following.

  • Placement: In every match, there are a certain number of squads, and placing your squad among the top squads by the end of the match matters a lot. As each ring closes and squads begin to eliminate, the LP starts to gain points, and placing among the top 5 squads can net you the most Ladder Points.
  • Eliminations: Getting Kills and dealing Damage to opponents is another great factor for earning LP. Each kill can net you some LP but eliminating a whole squad alone can net you the most points. Placing in the top 5 squads along with a decent number of kills easily nets you hundreds of points.
  • Ratings: MMR also plays a crucial role when comes to earning LP. Players will either improve or degrade their actual MMR after every match based on the encounters against opponents and the performance overall. If players manage to get eliminations and perform well, their MMR will increase, and get a Rating Bonus in LP at the end of the match.
  • Skills: The last factor that hasn’t been defined very well by the developers is Skill Bonuses. The only perspective we understand is winning an encounter against an opponent with a higher rank/MMR than yours. It will net you a few extra LP at the end of the match.
