Ilios Description

The Ilios map provides players with a stunning seaside view while they battle for control inside the Lighthouse, the Well, and the Ruins, and it takes place in the Aegean Sea of Greece which is part of the Mediterranean Sea. This map features several tight choke points and pitfalls, which makes it a great locale for intense Control matches. All three objectives of this map are completed in the following locations.

  • Lighthouse
  • Well
  • Ruins

So, this map has three separate maps or zones to fight within.

Ilios Tips and Strategies

Here are some of the important tips and tricks that you need to know when playing on the Ilios map in Overwatch 2.

Push and Pull Foes into Pitfalls

Ilios’ Lighthouse and Well offers large pitfalls around or inside their control points, acting as environmental hazards that teams should be wary of. For easy eliminations, send careless foes into these pitfalls with pushing and pulling abilities like Roadhog’s Chain Hook and Lúcio’s Soundwave.

Take Advantage of Narrow Pathways

Ilios’ Lighthouse and Well are also filled with plenty of narrow pathways and cramped buildings, making them havens for tight, close-range firefights. To make the most of these areas’ terrain, send heroes that excel in close and medium range, like Roadhog, Cassidy, and Zarya.

Utilize Ruins’ Long Sightlines

Ilios’ Ruins offer multiple long sightlines and high vantage points that overlook the large portions and control points of the Ilios map. To easily land lethal headshots from afar, take advantage of the unique terrain by using sniping heroes like Ashe and Windowmaker.

Objective 1: Lighthouse

There is a building on both sides that gives a good view of the objective that you can get up onto the roof. For turrets or snipers, this is the best place to use. if that is your play style then pick people off as they are coming to or from the objective. There are a few things to watch for, the main one being there are six entrances into the objective itself only if you are a tank planning on sitting on the objective itself. Take a look around and you might argue there are five, not six, well, look up and count again, and you might notice that there’s a hole in the ceiling here.

To get the drop into the objective, the most dangerous of those being a Reaper with his ultimate ready, Mobile heroes can use this to their advantage. If you are protective of the objective, watch for this, if you need to attack and take the objective over, use it to your advantage.

Objective 2: Ruins

The objective on this map is inside of a pit, and very exposed because of it. You can circle it from any direction and you will still have the high ground against anyone who is actively defending the objective. Because of this, a Junkrat can be extremely good because they can always lob bombs into that objective from a safe distance, and it’s very easy to do at that point.

You can also sneak past the objective through the building to the side of the objective, and it has a catwalk going right past the objective that’ll give you a good view of anyone standing on it. This can be great to use to sneak behind the enemy and flank them, or to rain death down on people on the point itself since I find most groups tend to watch the stairs instead of this spot.

Objective 3: Well

The main thing to watch out for on this map is the giant open well in the middle of the objective. Many heroes can use various forms of knocking people back around this hole and if you stand too close to it, there’s a good chance someone is going to knock you into it to your death. You need to knock them before they kill you.

Lucio can be good for this map because of the alternate fire knockback, or Pharah as she can soar high over the objective and still land a long-range knockback. Also, the tall building just beside the objective can be climbed with mobile heroes like Hanzo and Widowmaker for ideal sniper positions that can overlook the entire objective. Look up and make sure they aren’t hiding up there as if there is one of these on the enemy team.

Team Explanation

This unique team composition works well on all three points in Ilios, taking advantage of the map’s narrow pathways, unique terrain, and cramped control points.

Alternative Tanks

D.Va: D.Va is an excellent alternative Tank in Ilios, covering her team from projectiles with Defense Matrix and bursting down nearby foes with Fusion Cannons and Micro Missiles. To let her easily shove foes into pitfalls and reach the map’s flanking routes, her Boosters are significantly effective in Ilios. For controlling space and dealing with foes around the control point, Self-Destruct is also a great ultimate in this case.

Roadhog: Roadhog is also a must-pick strong, aggressive Tank in Ilios. His Chain Hook and Scrap Gun can quickly pick off key enemy targets, giving his team a numbers advantage in most engagements. To push and pull enemies toward the map’s numerous environmental hazards, he can use Chain Hook and Whole Hog.

Sigma: With Kinetic Grasp absorbing enemy projectiles and Experimental Barrier granting mobile cover, Sigma has a versatile defensive kit that works well in Ilios. Accretion and Gravitic Flux are also potent crowd-control abilities, especially when used on the map’s control points and along its narrow corridors.

Zarya: Zarya empowers her Particle Cannon and lets her take down groups of foes with ease and also provides excellent damage mitigation with her Barriers. Graviton Surge is a potent disruptive ultimate when used in Ilios’ control points and choke points, especially when combined with her allies’ other ultimates.

Alternative Supports

Baptiste: With Biotic Launcher and Regenerative Burst while fortifying his team’s positioning with Immortality Field and Amplification Matrix, Baptiste offers potent area-based healing along Ilios’ narrow terrain. By using Exo Boost, Baptiste can also access Ilios’ vantage points, which provides him with better angles for shooting foes and healing allies.

Brigitte: Brigitte provides excellent frontline support with Inspire and Rocket Flail while covering her team from flankers with Whip Shot and Barrier Shield. To let Brigitte move around faster while providing temporary health to her allies, her Rally is also an excellent tool for attacking and defending the map’s control points.

Mercy: Mercy pairs well with Ilios’ high verticality and ample cover that let her become a solid alternative Support with Caduceus Staff and Guardian Angel. She is incredibly potent when paired with Heroes she can focus her healing and damage boosts toward, such as Pharah and Sojourn. To turn around team fights on the control point, Her Resurrect also has the potential to make an impact in the fight.
