Basic settings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nIf you are new and you want some good settings to start with always want to try out some new ones. I would say that I have pretty stock standard settings that you should try out. A few newer players almost anything is better than the default but these settings are ones that are almost identical to a lot of pros so start with these and turn off camera shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to Use Cameras<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYou have two camera states which are Ball camera and Car camera. Now when you\u2019re starting, I recommend you use a ball cam 90% of the time. It’s going to make it easier to track the ball as it makes its way around the field and even though it may feel a bit off-putting so, it\u2019s something you do need to get used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The only time I recommend turning on the Car camera is when you\u2019re starting when you\u2019re on your way back to defense so you can go over some of the boost pads or make sure that you don\u2019t bump your teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your Car doesn\u2019t matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYou can use anything. Yes, there are the best cars<\/a> that people prefer but you can use anything and it can be viable. Just go with something you like and stick with it. The only thing matters is that which strategy you use to play and your technical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\nStop reversing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nIf you reverses when out of position, stop this habit. Reversing is only helpful in very specific situations. Instead, it is a lot better for you to quickly half-flip<\/a> and start driving in another direction. Make sure you spend some time in here between your games, just to warm up or keep yourself warm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Use your right stick<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThe right stick is used to look around the field and see what\u2019s going on outside of your camera view not enough people use it. Even I barely use it, which I have meant to change for a while now. Get used to using it now and then to keep tabs on where your teammates and opponents are so you can better judge your positioning and decision-making during the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making sure that you\u2019re hitting the ball with the corner of your car to generate the most power is needed across every rank so, practice whenever you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Watch Streams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWatching YouTube videos are great but you don\u2019t get the full picture. When you watch someone\u2019s stream you get to see the entire game not just the highlights. This way you will find it a lot easier to follow someone\u2019s thought process during a play and you can have a better time learning from them if you were just watching people hit clips over and over again on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stop always holding the accelerate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nI have a bad habit of holding down to accelerate non-stop, but when I land in awkward positions, I have to power slide and flip out to regain my momentum. If I\u2019m holding onto my accelerator while sliding the wrong way, my recovery will be slightly messy. Instead, if you are landing in the wrong way just powerslide for that brief moment that you land and only accelerate once you have started the half-flip or the movement out of the awkward landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Play Casual Matches<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nCasual matches are a great way to try out new mechanics or a different way of playing if you are a little worried about your performance in ranked. Often, when I just want to mess around and go for everything, I\u2019ll jump into a few casual matches and just ball chase, this helps me focus on my boost management and my recovery time because I\u2019m constantly flying all over the place, and trying to get back as fast as I can.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learn to Flip both ways<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nEveryone has that one way they naturally flip towards. For me, I\u2019m comfortable flipping to my left. Make sure you train both ways though. It\u2019s going to be so much better if you down the track this is something that you do in your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rank means nothing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYour ranking means nothing as you are improving and still be in the same rank and it\u2019s fine. You can be improving and still go down a few ranks it\u2019s also completely fine. The way you need to look at it is if you\u2019re improving but losing eventually you will have improved to the point you can begin to climb back up again easily and eventually you will improve to the point where you can move past the rank you were first stuck on. Rocket League is a long-term game so stop treating it like you need to be the highest rank tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learn the side Flick<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThe side flick is one of the easiest and most useful flicks for players who are new to dribbling. Once you are dribbling the ball, simply flip sideways, this not only gives the ball height and speed it also gets you landing on your wheel a lot faster than any other flick which is incredibly helpful to give you an easy recovery. There are plenty of tutorials if you need extra help but this is the flick you should start with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t be hard on yourself<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n This game is hard and it takes thousands of hours to learn the ins and outs and thousands more to learn how to do everything well. So, don\u2019t get upset if you\u2019re having some trouble learning a mechanic or getting through a rank, just know that it all takes time for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Play 1v1<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n1v1 matches offer you the most time on the ball and end up being if you make a mistake, you get punished. In game modes with teammates, you can have backup when you make some mistakes and once you get scored on it is a very simple way to see where your faults are and can also be a great way to improve your challenge game, your recoveries, and your shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Learn a good kickoff<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nOne of the things you have to do in every single game of Rocket League is kickoff and most of the time it happens multiple times a game. There are many pro players in Rocket League<\/a> that you should follow. When you watch pro gameplays it\u2019s not often all these flashy mechanics and incredible goals. You\u2019ll find that most of the game is played through the basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- Good touches<\/li>\n\n\n\n

It is important to flip like when you\u2019re away from the ball and trying to build up some speed either moving up the field or rotating back but flipping all the time is just going to get you caught out of position. In the middle of the flip, you cannot stop yourself and adjust yourself. So, you might end up being mid-flip when you have the perfect opportunity to challenge the ball. So, if you\u2019re near the play or the player is very likely to move your way soon, try to keep your wheels to the ground to give you a faster reaction time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t just hit the ball away<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nPossession is key if you want to win. By moving the ball down the field every time it comes to you, you\u2019re instantly giving up pressure and giving your opportunities possession of the ball instead if you have the time, try to control the ball and dribble or take a touch and then look for a play. There will be times when booming the ball will be a good option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, when you\u2019re being heavily pushed in while defending and you are clearing to give your team time to reset but if you do have the time to control then take that time to control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Do this training pack<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nJust an overall really good pack to practice if you want to better your shooting skills. I recommend it for players at any rank but obviously, it\u2019s going to be a lot harder for some of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Face the Ball before Aerials<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nA simple tip that will save you a lot of trouble. Right before you\u2019re going to aerial through a ball just make sure you\u2019re lined up with it. This way you don\u2019t have to worry about air rolling early on to get yourself close to it and you can use your boost instead to get there as fast as you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Control is Key<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nAs stated earlier, trying to control the ball rather than booming away is important but if you\u2019re under a lot of pressure and you can\u2019t properly control the ball or boom it away then you should try to push towards 50-50. Moving away from the ball to get back on defense quickly or pick up some boost stops you from having any pressure at all and even 50-50 means you\u2019ll be stuck with no boost. You are still buying time for your team to back you up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 50-50 also means that the opponents don\u2019t get full control over where the ball goes after the challenge and if you learn how to properly challenge you will end up not only winning but being able to move forward into a play for the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Safety touch to the corner<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nOn defense, your safety often lies in your own corner. If you have any doubt about where to clear the ball, it is normally pretty safe to just get a soft touch to the corner so you can follow up and keep control of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Try to avoid just hitting it straight down the middle back to your opponents as it often going to lead to just another shot back at your net and even if you head it to the corner and your opponent gets possession, then you know exactly where they\u2019re going to hit the ball and which angle to block, so, you have much easier time defending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Use workshop Maps<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nIf you have the option then use workshop maps. The basics like rings and speed trials are often good to train your aerial car control they can both be really good to warm up with before you jump in a ranked and you can find some different kinds of workshop maps to work on different aspects of your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Face the ball <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nKeeping your nose of the car facing the ball at all times means that you\u2019re going to be able to react faster to the play and have an easier time getting involved. If you start turning back too early then your opponent might be able to see that and take advantage of the space that you\u2019ve given them but if you stay facing the ball you will be ready to jump in and challenge or move into the defensive position if you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thinking about the landing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nOnce you know how you need to hit the ball while you\u2019re in the air, you should try to think about the best way to position your car after landing. If you can make sure you\u2019re always landing wheels down on a surface, it will quickly become second nature and you\u2019ll have a much faster recovery time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Losing=Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nDon\u2019t worry about losing, if you lose simply view it as a way to learn from the mistakes in that game and move on. Letting yourself get upset by a loss and taking nothing away from it is a waste of a game. Always think about what went wrong and where you could have improved or made a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t use the boost on defense <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nA lot of time while defending, you\u2019ll see players use up a lot of boosts when they don\u2019t need to. It\u2019s only going to make it harder for you to push out of defense as a team and you\u2019ll end up stuck in your net with nothing in the tank. Instead, try to be smart with your positioning and only use a boost when you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Make your training packs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nIf you can\u2019t find training packs for the situation you need just make them, this way you have your own specific training pack custom-built for your own wants and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Don\u2019t risk while winning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYou only need to win a game by one goal. If there are 10 seconds on the clock and the score is one Nil then it doesn\u2019t matter if regular time ends at 2 nil as long as it doesn\u2019t end at 1-1. Stop taking those risks because you want to score another goal. If you want to win a game think it through. Would you rather win or get a chance at scoring that then results in you losing? Just be smart about that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mechanics aren\u2019t needed<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nYou hear that mechanics aren\u2019t everything and they aren\u2019t needed at all. Players reach supersonic legend with just the fundamentals and while that is completely true, it doesn\u2019t mean you should neglect them all together. Mechanics make the game easier for you as you will be able to do things otherwise couldn\u2019t if you hadn\u2019t trained them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Watch replays<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWatching your replays is one of the best ways to improve, you get to sit back without the stress of playing and just take in all the little mistakes you make as you play. It\u2019s not an easy thing to look at your gameplay and criticize every single thing about it but doing so will help you see the flaws and parts of your game that you might have otherwise thought you were doing perfectly which is going to help you improve later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only air roll for the purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nAir roll is something that will take you a very long time to learn, and it is something that you might still struggle with. Air roll will make you slow, give you less accurate hits, and be a bad habit overall. Instead, you want to only air roll for those minor adjustments in order to be accurate with your touch. By normal Aerialing the entire way and then air rolling at the end, you also allow yourself to adjust to any potential challenges in the air because you\u2019re going to be able to angle your car to take a good 50-50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Challenge as the first man <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nAs the first man on your team, your job is to challenge. For example, if you have two teammates behind you and your opponent has the ball then why wouldn\u2019t you challenge? You are forcing your opponent to do something with the ball. They either have to hit it over you, try to pass it, or accept that they\u2019re going to get a 50-50 which might win the ball from them but if it goes over you, you have got a teammate who is in the second man position ready to challenge and the ball is already moving towards them. So, they are going to have an easier time reaching it against the oncoming opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the first man tries not to play scared and instead challenges and forces your opponent to make a play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Solo Q vs Teammates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\nSolo Q is better for making you a better all-around player as you\u2019re going to get used to adapting to different play styles and learning to fit into different teams but playing with teammates is less frustrating, which can be a big thing when it comes to improving so do what you think is best for you. <\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Look for Opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWhile rotating back, you often see an opportunity that can disrupt the play or catch an opponent off guard. For example, a bump is a demo or even a slight cut to get a touch while the opponent tries to control the ball. Instead of blindly going back to the third-man position and not paying attention. Try to look for these moments where you can remain in action while also impacting the game around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
