1v1 Mode Rocket League Tips
It is smarter and safer to be pressurizing or at least near the attacking player at all times instead of sitting in the net until they shoot. By sitting and waiting you will allow your opponents to make many mistakes and not get punished for them. They can begin dribbling and mess it up then just start another one over until they get comfortable and have an easy time flicking towards your goal. On Top of that, they get to take the ball wherever they want. They can gather a boost and have as much momentum as they want to press your net.
Now you compare this with someone who stays close and pressures the attacker.
- If a mistake is made, you can turn and capitalize.
- If they drop the ball and med dribble, you can challenge.
- You can boost staff them and also shadow defense them and the opponent player will have less of a chance of scoring.
- Just staying close you get to shut down a huge number of opportunities and force your opponents to either score or defend.
The next important thing that almost every single player could have looked at improving is stealing and denying boosts. You have to keep improvising the skills for stealing the boost and denying it. The best instance where players can bring this into the gameplay is directly after a shot.
- If you shoot toward the opponent’s pad and they save it you’ll normally given two options depending on their touch.
- If they save and control it then you have to get ready to defend them from starting a counter-attack.
- If they defend it and don’t control it then you go for another shot
- If you have the option to shoot after your opponents make a touch instead of shooting just move the ball back and steal their boost.
- Sometimes just stopping your opponent from collecting a boost is going to give you a better shot a few seconds later into the play.
Starving Boost
If you are toward one of the sides or if you’re in the position to collect the corner boost or even small pads near the opponent’s net without your opponent being able to break away down the field. You should take this opportunity to starve your opponent of their boost.
- Starving leads to many outcomes When the opponent has no boost they will struggle to keep up with multiple shots.
- You can also create distance by taking the ball back and starting your dribble.
- If they have no boost then they can’t catch up to you and stay close to pressure you which means they have to stay around the net to try and stop your flick.
Shot Creativity
Most of the players are more creative with their shots including movements, shots, aerial mechanics, ground play, and recoveries. Most of the players just get the ball, drive straight down the center of the field, and try to flick it. You have to be more creative like taking the ball into the air, going off the ceiling, going for reset or doble touches or hook shots.

Spacing
Spacing is critical in doubles because so much room to work on the field and improper spacing will get punished quickly. Consider the field as the zone and divide each zone into subzones. The first and most obvious rule is don’t be in the same zone as your teammate so they have some space to work with.
- Don’t want an entire zone in between you and your teammates.
- In doubles, you need to be there to support your teammate in both offense and defense.
- You have to give your teammate space in the ball.
- If your teammate is with you on the attack, waiting for the pass but not right behind you or beside me you have to give a high-level pass.
Pressurizing your Teammates
Keeping proper spacing with your teammates allows you to put tons of pressure on your opponents. Pressure leads to mistakes in the Rocket League. You can easily score by making the opponents make any kind of mistake by applying pressure on them. 2v2 is just about switching who’s applying pressure.
- If both the opponents are not going on the ball to put pressure and instead both the opponents turn around and leave plenty of space will automatically give you a chance to score.
- In low levels, you can pass by playing carefully and staying back.
- Rotation in 2v2 is very simple compared to 3v3, either you put pressure on the ball or your teammate does and one of you has to be on the ball. 2v2 is a rotation by only exchanging the role of putting pressure.
Awareness & Flexibility
In doubles, it is really important to understand what your teammates and opponents are trying to do and then quickly adapt to that. In double, Rocket League is an open and fluid game so the ability to anticipate what’s happening, and quickly improvise will give you a huge advantage. If you pass a ball to the opponent and he quickly reacts before the opponent will be risky but it will allow your teammate to go for the score.
Most of the time you will manage to push the ball to the side of your half and allow the other team to keep possession but keep the ball out of the net until your teammate gets back
Conclusion for 2v2
Give your teammates some space, but not too much Apply pressure and one teammate should always be on the ball.
- Be attentive and flexible, and know when it’s time to change zones, who is on the ball, and know how to best support your teammate.
- Be the backbone of your teammate by sweating, ball chasing, and trying to score awesome goals to being the backbone of your team from always being in a position to defend and counterattack, being there for passes, or even if your teammate has messed up.
- You can do pretty much anything except high Ariel’s with 20-30 boost and could have easily hit the ball to a corner to buy time for him and his teammate to collect boost and reposition.
- pushing is the correct choice here at higher-level plays. (chances are lower-level players will just hit it straight to the goal without doing anything like dribbles, flicks, fakes, etc.)

3v3 Mode Rocket League Tips
Rotations in 3v3
1st man, 2nd man, 3rd man
Offensive Strategies
- 1st man’s role: starting the offense, setting up teammates, or scoring goals using solo plays, passes, dribbling the ball, or putting the ball in a difficult position to break down offense. Once 1st man is done with whatever they attempt, they immediately rotate back to 3rd man.
- 3rd man’s role: fill relevant spaces that the 1st and 2nd man can’t fill. (Positioning oneself in the best position to be ready for a long shot or a chance to score by looking at where teammates and opponents are at, distancing away from teammates.) Third man rotates and becomes 2nd man when 1st man rotates back.
- 2nd man’s role: being ready to shoot off of a pass from 1st man, or being instantly ready to become 1st man.
keep in mind that you don’t always have to be the one to score off of 1st man, you can let 3rd man rotate up and hit the ball, (ONLY if 1st man is already rotating back to become 3rd man)
Defensive Strategies
- 1st man’s role: challenge the ball first, (smart challenge, not just jumping at the ball), if the first man fails, this is the worst-case scenario. You’ll be out of the play. try rotating back to 3rd man immediately. if you can get the ball away from the opponent, recognize if your teammates can get a pass to you going downfield. (outlet pass) again, if the pass is not there, rotate back to third man.
- 2nd man’s role: playing behind the 1st man, you need to be on the ball right after 1st man challenges, or else the challenge from 1st man will be all for nothing. just banging the ball downfield will not break you out of defense. you need to go for that outlet pass to try to put some pressure on the opponent.
If the outlet pass is not there, you are now the first man. you can linger downfield if you lose possession of the ball if you know that your teammates can follow up with a pass.
- 3rd man’s role: also has the role of looking for an outlet pass. If you have teammates already on the ground covering the net, get on the backboard to look for a clear. know what role you are in.
Positioning for defense:
1st man: Challenging
2nd man: near post, being ready to go upside wall to contest the ball or follow up on challenge to pass up the ball.
3rd man: far post, defending shots always. Never go for a corner boost unless you know that goal is covered.
