Overwatch 2 Rank Explained
There are two main ranked modes in Overwatch: Open Queue and Role Queue. To unlock and play both ranked modes, you must win 50 Quick Play games in Overwatch 2 or have previously owned Overwatch 1.
Role queue will help to lock your team composition to two support heroes, two damage heroes, or one tank hero. Get an individual rank for each role by selecting the roles you want to queue for, and play matches. In Open Queue, you can choose any hero in any role and you receive one, universal rank as this ranked mode is a free-for-all like the original Overwatch was back in 2016.
You won’t need to play games to earn a rank again, unlike in previous Overwatch 2 competitive seasons. But you must complete 10 placement matches every year for each role. The game will start predicting what rank you’ll end up with based on your performance as you’ll be playing each match.
Your rank will update whenever you’re struggling, or you fill the bar toward your next skill division when it drops down to the previous skill division.
What is Skill Rating in Overwatch 2 ranked?
Every single player gets Skill Rating one after they complete their Placement Matches. Players will get a different SR for each role – DPS, Support, and Tank based on both Role and Open Queues.
Skill Rating isn’t used in Overwatch 2 as it is a relic of Overwatch 1, especially now in Season 9’s Competitive overhaul. To talk about where a player is placed in the ranked ladder, SR is still used as a colloquial term among Overwatch players. Remember that the higher your SR, the higher your rank, and vice versa.
The system will assign you a rank once you complete these preliminary games. Your losses, wins, and performance during placements do matter, but less so if you’ve played for many seasons on the same account.
Overwatch 2 Ranks You Can Earn
With Champion at the top, Overwatch 2 ranks are broken up into eight medals that represent each skill tier. Each skill tier has five numerical divisions within it that climb until you break into the next highest tier. You’ll start in Platinum 5 if you’re Gold 1 and go up in rank. Each rank operates as a different tier. You’ll move to the next rank if you get enough SR and on the other hand, if you lose too much, you risk being demoted down a rank.
Here are all the Overwatch 2 competitive ranks you can earn:
· Bronze 5-1
· Silver 5-1
· Gold 5-1
· Platinum 5-1
· Diamond 5-1
· Master 5-1
· Grandmaster 5-1
· Champion 5-1
· Top 500: Top 500 players in your region, whatever rank
Rather than getting confused, it’s better to think of Top 500 as more of a title than an actual rank. These Top 500 players could be spread throughout Grandmaster and even in the Masters as well. If you don’t make it into Master or Diamond right after placements then don’t worry as most of us haven’t either as the vast majority of Overwatch players ended up in Silver, Gold, and Platinum though.

Overwatch 2 Rank Modifiers
You’ll see a rank information screen showing your progress toward the next skill division after every competitive match. The bar displays a percentage of how much progress you lost or gained. Modifiers accommodate your progress more or less based on many factors.
Here are all the rank modifiers and what they represent.
Win Streak | Bonus for a high win rate |
Loss Streak | Penalty for a high loss rate |
Calibration | Your rank is uncertain |
Uphill Battle | You weren’t favored but you won |
Reversal | You were favored and you lost |
Volatile | You lost calibration matches after ranking up |
Consolation | You weren’t favored and you lost |
Expected | You were favored and you won |
Demotion Protection | You are one loss away from a demotion |
Playing In a Group Works in Overwatch 2 Ranked
While playing in groups, Overwatch 2’s competitive modes have some limitations. As long as the players aren’t at the far ends of the rank spectrum, they can group up with pretty much anyone. High-ranked players have some strict limitations to abide by.
I’ve listed the rules below that must know, but pay close attention to the difference between a rank and a skill division. High-ranked players have to focus on the individual skill divisions (e.g. Master 3 or Grandmaster 1) and other players can play with anyone up to two whole ranks above or below them.
These rules will be removed in season 10.
· Champion players – One player within 3 skill divisions
· Grandmaster players – Anyone within 3 skill divisions
· Master players – Anyone within 1 rank
· Diamond, Bronze, Platinum Silver, and Gold players – Anyone within 2 ranks
Does the Top 500 work in Overwatch 2 Ranked?
Two weeks into every season will mark the release of the unique rank icon and Top 500 leaderboards. They will become available to play on the same day if the season introduces a new hero. Top 500 is a list or a shifting leaderboard of the highest-ranked players broken out by each role and a combined role category. You can easily see the leaderboard under the competitive card in the main menu.
You technically don’t need to be a certain rank to make it into the Top 500 leaderboard. It’s a picture of the highest-ranked Overwatch 2 players and it shifts as people lose and win. Chances are other players will push you out of it rather quickly if you barely squeeze into the Top 500. You can also expect ranks to change daily.
While playing in Role Queue or Open Queue, the requirement to get into the Top 500 is to play and win 25 matches. It will largely consist of Master, Grandmaster, and Champion players as the Top 500 is quite literally only the top 500 players out of what is probably thousands, if not millions, of players in total.
Your invisible rank, or matchmaking rating (MMR), will decay, or be lowered, to place you in easier games in case you’re a bit rusty if you take a long break from playing. When you return to get you back on track quickly then the MMR will adjust faster than normal.
How Overwatch 2 rank rewards work
Due to the overhauled system in season 9, the Overwatch 2’s competitive rewards are very different now.
Remember, now your rank lasts an entire year instead of each season, competitive points (CP) do too. Any CP will be converted into Legacy Competitive Points which you can still use to buy golden weapon skins that you earned before season 9. Unless Blizzard adds more rewards before next year, the CP earned in 2024 can only be used to purchase jade weapon skins. Your 2024 CP will become Legacy CP at the end of the year.
For 2024, golden weapon skins cost 3,000 Legacy CP, and jade weapon skins cost 3,000 CP. According to Blizzard, it will let you use 2024 CP to buy golden weapons soon.
Just like, Platinum Role Challenger is a competitive title, they are still rewarded at the end of a season so you can use it for the following one, but you no longer have to complete a challenge for them.
· Win: 15 CP
· Draw: 5 CP
· Bronze: 65 CP
· Silver: 125 CP
· Gold: 250 CP
· Platinum: 500 CP
· Diamond: 750 CP, Diamond Challenger
· Master: 1,200 CP, Master Challenger
· Grandmaster: 1,750 CP, Grandmaster Challenger
· Top 500: 1,750 CP, Top 500 Challenger
The CP you used to earn at the end of every season based on your rank has been cleared away. Any player who completes a total of 1750, 750, and 250 competitive games gets special titles called Expert Competitor, Seasoned Competitor, and Adept Competitor.
How Matchmaking Rating Works with Overwatch 2 ranks
Your MMR is a hidden, numerical reflection of your skill that exists to give you good matches. You’ll understand exactly what it is, but it should be roughly equal to your visible rank.
The MMR system compares your skill against other players, so you must adapt to the meta each patch to improve or maintain rank. Blizzard can never explain exactly how it works, nor can it show you your exact MMR value to keep the system free of manipulation by players who want to exploit it.
Competitive ranks are a detailed form of the leaderboard you’d check in a game at the arcade. The only thing you can control is how you learn and how you play. You should see your rank improve over time if you focus on winning matches instead of trying to game the system by playing certain heroes or chasing after certain stats.
