Discover everything you need to know about the Human Torch in Marvel Rivals, including his abilities, gameplay mechanics, and strategies.

human torch character guide

Human Torch is a secret DPS carry pick in Marvel Rivals. What he provides to the team is so unique and sets Johnny apart from the rest.

He’s not a duelist who focuses on finding quick picks. Johnny is all about controlling fights and creating as much pressure as possible. This allows the enemy team to never get comfortable supporting their tanks in the front line.

He’s different from other flyers like Iron Man, who wants to pressure through raw damage output. Put down your fireballs and walls to section off enemies from each other from the sky, and then strike them down once they’re weak.

Fire Cluster (Left Click Ability)

This ability allows the Human Torch to launch a cluster of splitting fireballs that function like a shotgun blast.

At close to medium range, these will stay more bunched up and do a higher, more concentrated burst of damage. This makes the Human Torch a real threat if he gets the jump on you.

However, past the 20M mark, they will do little more than lightly tickle all enemies in the spread. The projectile speed of this ability is 150 m/s, and the shot damage is 5.5 per round.

Blazing Blast (Right Click Ability)

The Blazing Blast is a versatile charge-based projectile that has a really quick recharge rate.

This allows you to launch a fireball that can either directly strike an enemy or hit the ground and create a flame field, dealing AOE damage over time to any enemies nearby.

You’ll notice three flames that swirl around the Human Torch. Every time you cast one of these blazing blasts, those swirling flames will reflect it.

This is a skill you’ll be using constantly due to its high uptime. Use this ability to make areas of the battlefield annoying to fight around. Since the damage over time from these, especially when stacked, can add up.

Pyro-Prison (E Ability)

Blazing Blast gets put to use whenever the next ability, Pyro-Prison, is off cooldown.

When there are at least two or more flame fields on the battlefield, casting this ability will dynamically connect them. This allows you to form a firewall that will deal one-off high damage to enemies that pass through the threshold.

If you manage to arrange three or more flame fields on the ground that end up creating an enclosed shape, any enemies within the boundaries of this field will take continuous damage.

This is one of the main nuances with his kit. The flame fields will always form lines to each other regardless of where they’re placed. But if a wall or elevated terrain intersects that wall, the enclosed field will not be treated as being enclosed.

The DOT damage will not occur to enemies.

Plasma Body (Left Shift)

Your left shift ability, Plasma Body, is a glorified aerial sprint.

This does allow you to move forward faster while you have the energy. However, the real use here is activating it in short bursts to move from side to side or ascend quickly behind cover, avoiding enemy attacks.

Flaming Meteor (F Ability)

Human Torch is squishy; you can’t take too many direct hits from enemies before you die.

This ability lets you dive towards the ground and deal damage to enemies you come into contact with. At first glance, that might seem a bit counterintuitive as a squishier hero.

It has two different use cases:

  1. Diving into groups of enemies that are low health in hopes of finishing them off.
  2. Disengaging from a fight in the air and ducking into cover on the ground.

Just be aware that you can only perform this move when you are a certain distance above the ground.

Synergy with Flame Fields:

If you perform a Flaming Meteor dive onto an active flame field, it will detonate for additional damage and apply knockback.

Keep in mind the flame field is consumed in the process. That means you no longer get the damage-over-time effect, and you can’t use it to form a Pyro-Prison.

You’ll want to make sure you’re getting as close to a full duration of a flame field as possible before detonating it to maximize your DPS.

If a Pyro-Prison is already active, detonating one of the flame fields won’t get rid of the enclosed shape.

Supernova (Ultimate)

The Human Torch’s ultimate ability is Supernova.

When used, you enter a limited-time Supernova state that, upon casting, deals a good chunk of damage to nearby enemies.

While in this state, Plasma Body will cost zero energy to use. Any flame fields generated by your Blazing Blast attacks will transform into flame tornadoes that deal substantial AOE damage.

You can rapidly stack these, but keep in mind you can’t have more than four active tornadoes at a time. Casting a fifth Blazing Blast will immediately end the oldest active one.

The best time to use this ability is when enemies are in confined choke points. The stacking damage from these tornadoes can take down most characters.

However, they don’t offer much of a threat if you can quickly get away from them. It’s also important to know that while Supernova is active and you’re making flame tornadoes from these flame fields, you can’t use your Pyro-Prison.

Your time in this state is very limited, essentially enough time to get off seven or eight Blazing Blasts before you’re back to normal.

So, bursting groups of enemies or an isolated, immobile target is the name of the game.

Human Torch Team-Ups in Marvel Rivals

The Human Torch also has two team-up abilities:

  1. United Siblings – A team-up with the Invisible Woman. It provides the Human Torch with an active ability that allows him to regain bonus health. For a character that is squishy but likes to dive in to finish off enemies, this team-up can quite literally save your life.
  2. Omega Fire – A synergy with Storm. This allows you to turn her hurricane ultimate into a larger burning hurricane. It will hit much harder while also amplifying any of your flame tornadoes as her hurricane passes over.

What’s even cooler about this ability is how intuitive it actually is to activate.

Once the Human Torch goes Supernova and casts a flame tornado, Storm can target that tornado to immediately spawn her ultimate right on top of that position.

This allows the Human Torch to set up great tornado positions while Storm effectively gets a much quicker cast time on her ultimate.

How to Counter Human Torch

With The Thing flying around the skies, dishing out a lot of damage, you’re not safe around this guy.

If you keep your distance, he shouldn’t be able to take you out anyway.

The other tank that can take you out is Hulk, because he can jump to take you down and bubble your engages. Ulting Magneto can also just suck up all of your tornadoes, which is incredibly infuriating.

In terms of DPS, there are quite a few that are annoying. Hela and Hawkeye can easily eliminate the Human Torch if they work in a team.

Iron Man also does a great job of dueling you from range. Never take a duel with him in Overdrive form unless you can get the jump on him or if you’re 10M or less away from him.

This way, you don’t run into spread or damage from falling off and can out-damage his beam.

Human Torch Synergy

Johnny functions well with dive tanks like Captain America.

He can zone the enemies off from each other, and then Cap can punch them in the direction of the Pyro-Prison.

Adding Jeff in this comp is also unstoppable.

DPS characters like Psylock can follow up on the damage and are pretty strong, but other divers like Black Panther and Iron Fist don’t mind either.
