Codename: Apollo is the next expansion coming to Destiny 2 as revealed by Bungie in a recent update. Apollo will be a nonlinear story adventure. This is a big move for Destiny 2 as is moving away from annual expansions. The Final Shape will be the last annual expansion. There will be no more three-act episodes in Destiny 2.
Starting with Codename: New Frontiers in 2025, there will be a paid expansion for six months each. Expansion will include new seasons and major updates throughout the months to keep everything fresh and there will be new content added in the expansions.
When is the Destiny 2 Codename: Apollo coming?
Destiny 2’s next expansion Codename: Apollo is coming in summer 2025, there will be two major updates in Apollo. Codename: Arsenal which will be added in the coming months along with a reward pass. Another major update will be added to Apollo in Fall 2025 called Codename: Surge. Both of these major updates will include a reward pass. Also, the Season will be available to all the players.
This is not all after the Apollo is over, we are getting another full-size expansion in Winter 2025 with the Codename: Behemoth. There will be similar to major updates in Behemoth and will run till Spring 2026. There will be a major update in winter and then in spring, both updates will include a reward pass as well.
These changes to Destiny 2 are being implemented due to lower and lower sales of annual expansions. Tyson Green game director also, added that expansion starting to feel “too formulaic” and “over too quickly with little replay value.” Green also focused on “it’s time for Destiny to change and evolve,” and the new expansion system will be bringing big changes.
“But the truth is that they dominate almost all our development efforts. We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliver Destiny 2 content so we can invest in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to players.” This explains how Bungie feels about sales declining for Destiny 2 Expansions.
Bungie is moving towards new ideas to hype the Destiny universe with new strategies that will make help get a player base similar to Shadowkeep. ” The game’s updated roadmap says expansions will add new locations as well as the expected stories, activities, and gear, and we’ll be going to “places Destiny has never seen before.”
Non-Linear Campaigns in Destiny 2 Codename: Apollo
Bungie focused on explaining moving to non-linear campaigns and Green says that Destiny 2’s new expansion system will help the team plan a “new opportunity to try something different.” They insured fans moreover, that there will be no compromises on great storytelling.
Bungie Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Destiny
Developer Deep Dive is also coming soon according to Bungie. They celebrated Destiny’s 10th anniversary and revealed new upcoming armor sets coming to each class which are live now in the game. These rewards offer a Legend title and seal.
How does Codename Apollo work?
Narrative director Alison Lührs gives a glance at how the world is Codename: Apollo and the first concept art for the new non-linear Destiny adventure. Apollo will include a branching and layered storyline. There will be multiple exploration points A, B, C, or D which can be explored in any sequence.
“This shift to nonlinear stories isn’t something we’re locking ourselves into, but it is the structure that fits Codename: Apollo best,” Lührs said. “The narrative structure of the releases that follow will be quite different, a structure to suit that game’s experience, and we want to continue to innovate with each expansion across both gameplay and narrative.”
Moreover, the main storyline and theme will be shown in the upcoming months according to the team at Bungie. However, this is a massive shift for Destiny 2 and a big overhaul to the game. This new multi-year content journey looks promising for both the team and players with the end of The Final Shape.
